Naval hero dead Gridley dies after Manila Bay glory
Capt. Charles Y. Gridley commander of the Olympia and an admiralty adviser to Dewey died at Kobe Japan. The Navy reports his illness stemmed from a rupture believed to have occurred at Manila Bay and notes he left Hong Kong May 28 aboard the Coptic. Gridley leaves a widow and three children and was born in Logansport Indiana in 1846.
