Eight Mile Residents Attend Services and Visits

Rose Valley Dave Diehl, a jovial Eight Mile resident, dined at the Thornton home last Monday. Visitors from Eight Mile included Warren Holloway Miss Sa die Calloway Dave Diehl and Ernest Scott who attended Divine services on the twelfth. Rev B March visited W. B. Martin after service and went to Williston with Frank Evans on Monday. Rev. Mareh and Joe Taylor were also seen visiting.

Antone Kyrg spent a few days in Williston this week while Olaf Opien, work near York, visited and returned to York Saturday afternoon. Knute Sanders aided Hansen in hay season. Local ball team lost in Williston to Tuxedoes and Traveling Men. scores 10-6 and 9-5. Bonetraill baseball tourney drew crowds. Squires beat Gladys 5-0. Dance at Emil Lee’s. Williston Grays next Sunday game.

Rev Henness preached in the school house Sunday as haying season begins in Carden Valley. The hot dry weather ripens grain early while the walls of the school house received a fresh white finish last week. The Literary society met last Saturday evening. John Hamilton and Randolph Reider did business in Willis ton Monday. The Beronek family from LaCross Wis visit Mrs J C Schaller. Irene McCormick returns home to Williston-area and visits Mrs O C Eberg. The Sunday school red and blue contest ended with blue buttons winners.

Firebug’s Work in Mill City Causes Downtown Blazes

An unknown pyromaniac with kerosene soaked paper set fire to ten buildings in Minneapolis downtown wholesale district. The fires damaged Hennepin Trading, Zimmerman Stone, Northwestern hotel, Igo Express, George Day stables, Market hotel, barber shop, Gordon warehouse, and Martin’s saloon. Firefighters saved most structures though losses total about 2000. The arsonist escaped as crews fought multiple blazes rapidly.

Cloudburst Strikes Arlington Crops Causing Heavy Damage

A July cloudburst dumped over five inches of rain in minutes, flattening grain and washing fields. Roads became impassable, bridges washed out, and stock losses reported. Joseph Bennett escaped injury by sheltering under his wagon as lightning killed a horse and burned nearby grass.

Des Moines July 28. After a prolonged count the contest between Judge J F Prouty and Capt J A T Hull ends with Hull securing the Republican nomination for the Seventh district by a 40 vote majority from the June 2 primary ballots in Dallas County.

William Jayne Dakota Governor and Lincoln associate

William Jayne early in Lincoln’s presidency became Dakota territory’s first governor. A Springfield lawyer aged about thirty five, he organized the territorial government and led an ambitious bid for Congress. Defeated in a contested election, he resigned as governor and returned to Springfield, living to eighty two. He was one of the few who could say he knew Lincoln.
