Former Texas congressman known as Cyclone Davis told Williston Chautauqua that the war drew America in after leaders feared a postwar United States could vanish. He recalled pacifist roots, Russia’s wartime plights, and Wilson’s message rallying the nation to support a democratic world order.

North Dakota Montana Crop Survey Shows Widespread Poor Yields

Louis P. Branca of Ely Salyards Grain Co reports from Minot that eastern North Dakota crops are fair only in the Red River valley and better on higher lands. The Mouse River valley and much of western North Dakota are poor or a total loss, with Montana also showing widespread dryness and low yields. Rust observed in North Dakota but not in Montana.

Interstate Fair is Some Show Says Williston Attorney

Williams G. Owens Williston state’s attorney says the Interstate fair is a show. He was in Fargo Monday with his family en route from Williston for a Minnesota lake district vacation and visited the fair briefly. Owens reports crops between Harvey and Fargo look good and notes the sun was extremely hot.

North Dakota Knights of Pythias held their annual state convention in Williston with delegates from across the state. Officers were elected for the coming year and Mandan named as next meeting site. bands performed and a $1000 state lodge appropriation supported Liberty bonds and Red Cross war relief.

North Dakota National Guard Company E Mobilized

With 152 men on the muster rolls, Company E of the North Dakota National Guard was mustered into federal service in Williston. Captain Wilson and Army Surgeon Captain Reynolds oversaw fitness and muster. Red Cross comfort kits were handed to the unit as morale and relief efforts begin. The unit awaits orders, expected to move by August 10, with full equipment hoped for before mobilization.
