Balloonists survive Chicago to Benton Harbor flight amid lake peril
Endurance balloon Ville de Dieppe and other craft faced peril over Lake Michigan. Col A B Mueller and seventeen year old George Schreeneck landed near Benton Harbor after dumping ballast and rigging to escape a perilous ascent of 7000 feet. both were soaked but uninjured. Other balloons, King Edward and United States, landed near Port Huron and Bruce County respectively, with crews injured by barbed wire and trees.

Fire Deepens Mine Disaster Death Toll at Rikovsky
In European Russia, July 4, a gas explosion in the Rikovsky mine triggered a fire that hampered rescue efforts. From the interior galleries 150 men remained trapped while 53 bodies were recovered and 75 wounded were moved to hospitals. Joel Chandler Harris known as Uncle Remus died at his Atlanta area home on Friday night. Born December 9, 1848 in Eatonton, Georgia, he married Essie La Rose in 1873 and joined the Atlanta Constitution in 1876. He later edited Uncle Remus Magazine before retirement.
