Honor for Quigley as Archdiocese of Chicago candidate

Information from Chicago reports that the Propaganda in Rome recommended Bishop James Edward Quigley of Buffalo for appointment as Chicago archbishop to succeed the late Feehan. Quigley, born 1855 in Oshawa, rose through St. Joseph's and Rome studies, Elliott language skills, and earlier fought socialism in his Buffalo diocese.

Fort Montgomery Fort Blunder on Canadian Soil

The fort on Lake Champlain near Rouse's Point, New York, known as Fort Montgomery, was built after the War of 1812 to guard the lake. It sits on Canadian soil per the forty fifth parallel adjustment, earning the nickname Fort Blunder. A marine sergeant now raises the flag at sunrise and sunset there.

Donatus Sbarretti recently named apostolic delegate to Canada. He has served as papal legation attache in Washington and bishop of Havana. Born in Spoleto in 1856 and ordained in 1879, he is regarded as a leading canon law scholar and versed in the U S constitution and Canadian government. He is a favorite of Pope Leo. He was born extremely small weighed 1 1/2 pounds and legs two inches long now five feet eight inches tall 145 pounds. He taught in country schools and loves children. He stops a mile from Spradling to collect candy tolls from small friends. He serves as general delivery agent and carries goods and merchandise along the route. He has killed many animals including rabbits squirrels opossums one bear two panthers and other small game. He preaches a ten minute sermon daily at Lena and Spradling and is now engaged to the prettiest mountain girl after many broken engagements. His route over rough roads requires fording Stillwater creek in floods and long climbs through the mountains.
