Narcisso Gener Gonzales editor of the Columbia State dies after four days of suffering from a shooting by Lt. Gov. James H. Tillman. Surgeons try formaldehyde injection. second infection fails. Coroner empanels a jury, news of death triggers half mast flags, telegrams flood in.
The Reverend Theophile Witlinger of Trinity German Lutheran Church in Rome is charged with peeping. Misses Mary and Caroline Geisler accuse him of watching from their bedroom window. Police traced footprints to his home and he was arrested after identification by the complainants. His prominence in local religious circles adds to the sensational case.
Mrs Letitia Eagle wife of S S Eagle superintendent of the Pressed Steel Car company and Avalon society figure faced a criminal court charge for the murder of her thirteen year old ward Edna Warner on May 9. The coroner had listed death as self inflicted but District Attorney Haymaker ordered a fuller probe. Eagle testified she was innocent and the Commonwealth's case was deemed weak leading to her discharge.
Washington January 21 The resignation of Binger Hermann of Oregon as commissioner of the general land office becomes effective February 1 and the nomination of W A Richardson former governor of Wyoming to succeed him will likely be sent to the Senate today.
Surgeon General Wyman led a Washington meeting with health officials from nineteen states Indian Territory and the District of Columbia to address the San Francisco plague. Dr Glennan reported Chinatown cases eighty seven and other areas six with Chinese predominance. Rat findings prompted calls for joint city state action and full cooperation with the public health service to suppress the outbreak.
In St. Louis a nineteen year old man Edward Spilker attempted suicide by shooting himself in the chest. A surgical operation closed the heart wound with three stitches. The bullet pierced the left lung apex and a 1.5 inch square portion of lung was removed. A silk ligature and chest drains were used. He rallied quickly and is believed to recover.
John W. Gates, in New York, says he wants an inning and a chance to reply to Morgan and Perkins who told the Interstate Commerce Commission Gates is a dangerous element in railroading and unfit to lead the Louisville and Nashville. He demands a hearing before the commission, promising startling revelations from a bold fighter.
In Red Wing Minnesota a horse owned by W. B. Kent ran over five year old son of Herman Landric fracturing his skull and leaving him fatally injured. The boy's father was killed eighteen months earlier. In Caledonia a special school meeting passed 327 to 122 to bond for 20000 dollars for a new school building and authorize sale of the present site and purchase of Gibbs block.
Fargo North Dakota January 21 The general store of Wellentine and Guilford at Alice south of Casselton was destroyed by fire The entire stock was lost and the financial damage is estimated at seven thousand dollars with four thousand dollars covered by insurance
Cumberland Wis Jan 21 Mrs Joseph Jacksche wife of a prominent farmer was killed instantly by a falling tree near her home south of here She leaves three small children.
Winona Minnesota council awarded the municipal lighting plant contract to W J Gray & Co of Minneapolis for 44890 with completion by June 15 and bonds set at 50000 amid charges of underhanded activity from rival bids by Fuller & Co Cleveland Tang and Crowley Electric of Duluth alleging faulty awarding process.
The Park Rapids Minnesota grand jury, after days in session, returns indictments against Dick Palmer for murder in the first degree in the Seeley case at Laporte, Frank Bask for murder in the first degree in Nevis, Ed Fournier for robbery in the first degree, and J W Butler and Howard Butler for illegal liquor selling. Trials to follow.
In Minneapolis on January 21 E A Tyler and C S Baldwin two men employed by the chamber of commerce were arraigned in municipal court for attempting to burglarize the Coe Commission company office in the Bank of Commerce building. They waived examination and were held to the grand jury under $500 bonds each. Their cases will be taken up by the grand jury now in session.
A January 21 blaze in Rolla North Dakota wiped out a general merchant Douglass Robertson's building and stock, with losses estimated at 12 000 dollars in advance 6 500 dollars. The rear shed burned but contents saved. Household goods also lost. Cause unknown though suspected burglary.
Albert Klemm was killed instantly when a grinding boiler on Fred Reecker’s farm exploded. The machine, condemned four years ago, was repaired last week and operated for about ten minutes before failure. Klemm was blown through the building wall, dying at the site.
Janesville citizens sue the city and contractors alleging conspiracy to defraud the town. The common council was restrained from approving payment to certain payors for work completed until the suit is resolved. The matter centers on alleged irregular contracts and financial improprieties within the city government.
Railroads Delaware Lackawanna and Western Erie and New York Ontario and Western worked through yesterday unloading anthracite, with cars unfrozen and large deliveries anticipated. Depots in the city report good coal stocks, though demand remains light.
