Washington DC January 15 1907 settlers receive a three month leave of absence without land office filing. The joint resolution passed both houses and allows return by April 14 without affecting entry rights or residence requirements. Suffering homesteaders in the west praised the measure amid severe winter conditions and heavy snowfall.

Home Wiped Out By Fire

Fire destroyed the home of J. D. Smith a 74 year old respected county resident and his grandson. All belongings including house sheds grain furnishings burned leaving him destitute prompting local subscriptions for aid. The blaze began in a top floor dormitory bathroom and despite rapid alarm and water effort the fire spread as neighbors aided in evacuating sleeping children to nearby homes.
