County Officials Take Oath of Office

The county officers elected last fall were sworn in Monday for two years. Three new officers: Mrs. W. C. Tatem county superintendent M. C. Dillon and C. J. Helle county commissioners. W. D. Electric light turned on in Williston city plant

The city celebrated the first electric lighting from the new plant Saturday night. Ten arc lights brightened the town, making it one of the best lit cities in the state. Homes were being wired and connected to the new power, and water service was also turned on with anticipated widespread connections.

Hansbrough Bill Seeks Federal Reserve of Coal Lands

Senator Hansbrough introduces a bill to reserve title to all coal, lignite, petroleum and natural gas deposits within the public domain to the United States, prohibiting grants or patents conveying those resources except where already fixed prior to passage or fraudulently acquired, while allowing landowners to use deposits for personal needs. The act also withdraws public lands eligible for settlement from entry due to coal reservations.

Farmers Burn Phone Poles Amid Coal Shortage

The fuel famine grips Ward county as towns Mohall Calvin and Crookston suffer from coal scarcity. The first coal car reached Mohall Sunday, but hundreds queued for it. Farmers southwest of Mohall cut down over a mile of telephone poles for fuel. Railroads promise effort, but cars go missing in the shuffle. If relief does not come soon, many prairie shacks may freeze.

Death of John R. Major in McKenzie county

John R. Major longtime McKenzie county resident and father of Mrs. David Lang died at his home last Thursday from heart failure. Funeral services were held at one o’clock, with Rev Hollett officiating, then burial in Williston cemetery. The community extends sympathy to the bereaved family.

Major John R died in faith and duty at New Chester

John R Major born Fort Atkinson Wisconsin February 20 1854 son of a U S Army man and member of Company D 29th Wisconsin Infantry died January 1 1894 at his claim leaving two brothers and a sister aged and respected family man. He married Aurelia McMillen October 20 1875 and had six children five living. A longtime Congregational church member for twenty years he was devoted to family and friends and lived in Christian faith.

Williston Commercial Club Elects Directors at Annual Meeting

The Williston Commercial Club held its annual meeting in the courthouse electing six directors for two years and five for one year. Officers to be chosen by the new board. Funds for a local college were discussed with a goal to raise from about 1500 dollars to 3000 dollars, with N B Ludonese appointed to lead donations before the 19th. The session, the best since organization, lasted till midnight.

Jubilee Singers Delight Williston Crowd in Opera House

The Dixie Jubilee Singers gave an entertainment that pleased the Williston music loving public. From the opening chorus to the final number the program drew rounds of applause in a crowded opera house. If they return next year Williston will need a larger hall to hold the crowd.
