Williston Graphic Explores Early American Money Names
An 1844 Ohio coin roundup traces foreign pieces like the six cent fippeny bit and the two-bit phrases still heard in Maine and New York. The account covers shillings, fip, bit, picayune origins, board and clothing prices, and the shift to modern cents and nickels during the Civil War era. It notes how the term picayune derives from French settlers in St. Louis and recounts the era’s clerks’ ciphering challenges.
