Washington January 1 The president of the Victor Bloede Company makers of fine inks and colors faces charges of conspiracy to defraud the government with Vandyck a bureau chemist accused of padding samples. Indictment details show payments totaling between 70000 and 75000 in checks and drafts over several years as Vandyck allegedly favored Bloede in color contracts.

Freight Train Cut in Two in East Dubuque Collision

A passenger train of Chicago Burlington and Quincy struck a Chicago Great Western freight crossing its tracks in East Dubuque on January 7. Engineer J.W. Blanchard of LaCrosse and Winfred McGaughey of East Dubuque were killed. W. H. Smith, the freight brakeman, was severely injured and likely to die as air brakes failed to halt the speeding passenger train.

Supreme Court to hear Great Northern rebate case

Washington on January 7 exposes arguments over a $15,000 fining for rebates to W P Devereux company and whether Hepburn act repealed Elkins. The case, possibly heard by Wednesday, involves Great Northern officials and Solicitor General Hoyt, with Standard Oil related petitions noted. Riots and Rent Strikes Spark New York Chicago Unrest

Incipient rent riots erupted on New York's East Side as tenants clashed with police over red flags and decorative banners in defiance of landlords. Five tenants were arrested after nightstick clashes while women and families joined the protests. In Chicago, 500 residents formed a tenants union vowing to push for a $2 monthly rent cut across the district.

Judge Grants Temporary Injunction Over South Dakota Rail Rates

Judge Carland of the U S district court in Sioux Falls issued a temporary injunction blocking the railroad commissioners from enacting a proposed passenger rate schedule. The plan would cut the state rate from 3 to 2 3 5 cents per mile. The order follows a restraining order secured last October. The hearing date is not yet fixed. The attorney general W S Clark and railroad commissioner secretary William H Stanley were demurred and are no longer defendants.

Minneapolis Man Takes Carbolic Acid at Drug Store

J E Chase a former furniture dealer in the city ingested an ounce of carbolic acid in Vogeli drug store at Hennepin and Washington avenues as customers waited for streetcars. He died at City Hospital after efforts by police ambulance and druggists. Domestic trouble due to drink given as the cause.

Herrick Aims to Seize County Seat from Fairfax

Rumors in Gregory county say Herrick, a growing town on the Rosebud ceded land, plans to initiate a movement to move the county seat from Fairfax to Herrick. The town has risen rapidly after the opening of the ceded Rosebud land.
