About 100 delegates from Missouri basin towns gathered January 22 23 and 24 in Sioux City to discuss making the Missouri navigable for steamboat traffic. Governor Burke chaired the meeting with appeals for federal funding and durable river improvements.
Washington January 31 The presidents special message on employers liability act and injunctions in labor cases was read in the senate shortly after noon. Vice president opened the envelope and an assistant secretary began the reading as copies were distributed to senators. Senator Davis Arkansas called for printing 10000 copies as a public document before the reading ended. The message was referred to the committee on interstate commerce.
Devils Lake February 1 The jury in the conspiracy to burn the I X L store case for Chris Dahl and John Thompson failed to agree after a long deliberation and was dismissed a second trial will be held. The panel reportedly favored conviction eight to four.
In Valley City North Dakota on February 3 Judge E T Burke opened an adjourned December session to try Mandan pig cases transferred from Morton county. Peter Schanitz led the docket with seventeen Mandan witnesses present. Froelich Thompson and Koch slated for trial this week as prohibition law violators. Attorneys for defense and prosecution argued indictments and demurrers before Schanitz went to trial as jurors were chosen.

He was 73, survived by a wife and four children. funeral Thursday at 2 pm conducted by the Masonic lodge, with burial in Macon Missouri. He served North Dakota as governor 1893 1895 and later worked at the U S land office.
