Lynching of Culbertson Rocks North Dakota Town

A mob of forty to fifty masked men stormed the county jail, seized Cleve Culbertson, dragged him to Muddy Bridge east of town and hanged him, then fired eleven shots. Sheriff Erickson and police faced threats. the crowd dispersed within minutes, leaving Culbertson dead. Coroner and authorities planned investigation. Governor Hanna offered assistance.

Adjourning Court Delays to January Fifth

District court adjourned Monday afternoon until January fifth. The calendar cleared with two state cases, Grotta and Johnson, to be tried before civil matters resume. Several other cases were disposed or dismissed. Roy Weisman was acquitted and Doherty’s case ended in a dismissal after a peace bond. Dray line business changes as Cascaden buys Hentges stake and will operate wagons for time of the Hentges Dray Line.

Williston Socialist Demands Probe of Lynching Culbertson

The Williston Socialist local passed a resolution condemning mob violence in the Culbertson lynching and sent a memorial to Attorney General Miller demanding an immediate and thorough investigation into the perpetrators and state law and dignity.

Library Re-registration Targeting 1911 Borrowers

The library begins on January 1 a re-registration of earliest borrowers from 1911 to issue new numbers or drop inactive names. Borrowers need only notify the librarian if they wish to continue.
