George Peterson a northern engineer lost two middle fingers and part of his left index finger last week on a trip between here and Minot. While adjusting a sand pipe on a steep grade he jumped off to push it into place and his hand was caught when a wheel passed over his fingers. He is in hospital recovering well.
Estimates from the International Institute of Agriculture at Rome report global wheat production at 2.468 billion bushels, 1.4 percent below last year, with barley down 6.7 percent. A Chicago dispatch warns that a general European war would drive famine, disrupting food supply as railways are mobilized and imports cut off, hurting Americans and the poor most.
Western railroad managers and 55 000 enginemen and firemen agreed to arbitration after President Wilson appealed for patriotism over property interests to avert a nationwide transportation strike. Mediators prepared for arbitration as a peace measure, with both sides signaling cooperation and the president warning of a national disaster if a stoppage occurred.
