A twelve man crew advances the pontoon bridge project for the Missouri River Bridge Company. Five boats are nearly complete as foundations are excavated for tower supports and overhead cable anchoring. If materials arrive, bridge readiness is targeted for September 1 with public tours invited to observe the progress.
Harold Gilbert suffered a painful injury when a can of Sweet cream exploded. The cover struck his face, breaking his nose and causing a deep facial laceration requiring stitches. The cream, hauled from Bixby, sat on the road two days to a week old, with heat and fermentation creating gas prior to the blast. Gilbert had recent near escapes, including being pulled from under a train.
Dickinson North Dakota August 2 Joe Hanley old time pioneer and buffalo hunter of Medora well known by Dickinson residents died in the soldiers home at Higginsville Missouri He was 75 and had been in fairly good health until diabetes Deceased sold his Medora ranch in 1905 to G O German nephew and moved back to his boyhood home at Monticello Missouri He later entered the soldiers home at Higginsville where he died.
AGENT GREER, who arrived in Williston from Rugby two months ago, is promoted to the Great Northern's largest North Dakota station at Fargo. He left April 1 to assume his new duties after earning many friends with his efficiency. Fred Thompson moves from Leeds to Williston to take Greer's place.
Mrs M A Hegge entertained on Friday afternoon July 28 in compliment to Mrs C L Marshall. Guests enjoyed conversation and guessing contests. Before lunch each guest decorated a paper plate with a floral design in water color, a contest that brought much merriment.
The last Cando team will travel to Williston for games on August 6 7 8 and 9. The series aims to decide the state championship and promises to be the best yet in this region. Admission is 35 cents with 10 cents for children under 15. Sunday game at 3 PM, other games at 6 30 PM. Friday and Saturday see Cando and Williston play two games at Ray for a six game span.
About 100 members of the St Paul Association of Commerce toured Williston on a Saturday morning stop. The party traveled by special train from the Plentywood line arriving late Friday night and parked in the Great Northern yards. They were greeted with a concert at the band stand and toured local gardens and farms with gifts of flowers vegetables and a clover sample for the dining cars. The visit promoted better understanding and cooperation between jobbers and Williston merchants and ended with trade booster cards displayed in local stores.
In a joint Williams and McKenzie county convention Usher L Burdick presided as nearly all precinct committeemen attended. H W Braatelsen was chosen to the Republican State Central Committee from the district and the district executive committee was elected. A resolutions panel drafted support for Hess nominees and urged legislation aiding agricultural interests in North Dakota.
Armed guards kept a band of I W W members away from a Soo line freight train in Valley City North Dakota as about 150 men from South Dakota and Jamestown area attempted to board. A reception of 200 had met travelers in Jamestown earlier. The attackers aimed to move toward central mobilizing points but were stopped before departure.
Williston city commission awarded a contract for six and a quarter miles of resident streets to Foster & Hanna at 16048 dollars after bids topped by J C Harding. The project moves 100000 cubic yards of earth and lays 155200 square yards of surface three inches deep by January 1 1917. Five blocks of sidewalks and cross walks in the west part were also let to J G Harding.
Missouri Ridge Club with friends from Illiston and Williston sets off for a round trip to Nelson Valley. They will inspect farms and crops then share a picnic dinner at Herman A Nelson's Bonanza Farm under Wil liston Commercial Club co operation. County Agent Hall and Secretary Morrill accompany the group enjoying a day after two nights of rain.
James Gleason, a 25 year old gambler and convict linked to a northern Mountrail county homicide, escaped from the Bismarck penitentiary and was recalled by Williams County jail officials. He boasted of avoiding work while inmates discuss a recent wave of prison breakouts and a boxcar hiding method used by other escapees.
Congress approved a 50 000 appropriation for the Williston Project of the U S Reclamation Service to finance development of electrical power for the city of Williston repairs to the irrigation system in the spring 1915 and pumping water for irrigation during the month of August 1916. The amount may be adjusted by actual needs as work proceeds.
The First Loan and Investment Company will relocate from the rear of the First National Bank into the room south of the bank, formerly EB Van Antwerp's furniture store. The First National Insurance Department, led by Pred Weatherwax, will share the upstairs view quarters with the loan company. The spaces will be unfinished and remodelled to fit the offices, with a planned move soon and a later finished room linked by a doorway.
A large concourse gathered at the family residence on East Broad way Friday afternoon, July 28, for funeral services held under the trees. Rev. F. S. Hollett, summoned from Fargo, spoke of the deceased's life with intimate personal touch. Floral offerings were profuse and music provided by a quartet. Interment followed at Williston Cemetery.
Local friends announce the marriage of Maida Meredith Hollett to Melvin Ross McCartney at the bride's Fargo home on Thursday July 27. The bride, well known in Williston, is praised for her virtues and charm. The groom, son of H C McCartney of Minneapolis, formerly Oakes, N D, is a businessman. They will reside in Fullerton, N D, where he has a bank position.
Syrian exiles in Williston welcomed Archbishop Baalbee Syria and Rev Agapios Golam in a Sunday service at St Cheyeomtomat Ue Episcopal church. The visit marked a high honor from the Greek Orthodox church, highlighting the community’s ties to their homeland.
The Archbishop and Rev Golam visited America avoiding danger by changing ships after learning Austria declared war on Serbia. They attended dinners and were hosted by residents including A. Munger and E. Munger, with officials like Rev N E Elsworth and W B Overson at events. The Syrian people suffer food shortages and Turk persecutions. eight bishops have been killed. The Archbishop and Rev Golam plan to depart for Fargo tomorrow as relief efforts continue.
In Bismarck on August 2 Arne Card of McKenzie County seeks men to join harvest fields. T L Stanley, special federal labor agent, is appointed to aid in scientific labor distribution. Letters go to commercial and farmers clubs urging cooperation and up-to-date reporting on work spots and capacities. Once filled the bureau will minimize crowding as machines and workers are mobilized for local needs.

A large crowd attended the Bonpoger Park baseball doubleheader featuring Williston versus the All Nations, a cosmopolitan team led by Donaldson and Mendez. Williston won the first game 6 to 1 behind strong hitting and errors, while the visitors swept the Monday pair 9 to 2 and 8 to 5, Donaldson pitching a shutout in the second game of the series. Umpires Riedon and Johnson received general satisfaction for their work.
The next regular teachers examination will be held August 10-11 at the Court House in Williston. The program lists reading rules pedagogy physiology and hygiene Thursday morning, history geography civics and 1000 2:30 to 4:15 schedule, and Friday afternoon psychology with optional subjects for second and first grade certificates. County Superintendent Anna M. Peterson notes the exams start promptly each day.
Williston farmers' duo and Williston Commercial club members will tour the Yellowstone Valley on Saturday. The trip starts in the morning from Williston with autos provided by local club members. City residents join to view crops, farm homes, and farming methods en route to Sidney, Montana, mirroring a Missouri Ridge club excursion and promising a pleasant, profitable day.
