John Cassell, 17, son of a prominent banker, was severely burned while soldering on a roof. His clothes caught fire and he jumped to the porch and ground in a failed attempt to escape. He died minutes later. the local teen was well known and the tragedy shocked Hope residents.

Lightning hit the A. Butts elevator in Glenburn on July 29 causing total interior blaze before discovery. Only the desks, books, and the owner's car were saved as three box cars were moved to prevent spread. Farmers elevator and coal shed endured near misses. Built 1904 by Harry Gidley later owned by A Butts and Poehier Grain Co. Value $8,500, insurance $5,500. This was Glenburn’s worst fire.

Matsuhito, emperor of Japan, died at 12 48 a.m. Acute nephritis listed as cause. Crown Prince Yoshihito succeeded to the throne.
