British Sea Forces Block Bruges Canal Entrance

London April 23 Sir Eric Geddes announced in the House of Commons that the Bruges canal entrance has been effectively blocked by the naval raid. British parties were landed to distract the enemy. an attacking officer was killed. Two blockading ships were sunk and two launches missing. one destroyer and two coastal motor boats were sunk. Zeebrugge Mole explosives and Ostend Zeebrugge ports remain key submarine bases targeted by Allied action.

Robert Bousliman Home From Camp in Wartime Letter

Corporal Robert Bousliman returns home from Camp Dodge to attend his grandmother Mary Bousliman’s funeral. He notes five Wil_liston boys in his division all holding non commissioned offices and North Dakota troops healthier. Camp life includes seven hours drill daily and one hour recreation with baseball and basketball. The camp theater shows government plays funded by soldiers, tickets via savings books. Home folks urged to mail more letters and funds as soldiers need morale and money for Liberty Bonds War Savings Stamps and insurance. Robert expects extended stay at Camp Dodge. A Liberty Loan meeting at John Moline farm raised 1450 for Liberty Bonds with Red Cross ladies serving supper.

Bainville Man Killed By Train

A Bainville man Leo Biladeau aged about 22 was killed Tuesday afternoon when attempting to catch a moving freight near Snowden. His legs were severed by the train and he lay beside the track until the Watford train conveyed him to Williston, where he died en route or shortly after arrival. Relatives live in Bainville. burial planned there.

Canadians Raid German Lines Across Seven Fronts

Canadian Army headquarters reports seven raids on German lines in the last twelve hours. Canadians bombarded trenches with thousands of lachrymatory and lethal shells, engaged in hand to hand fighting in places, netting five prisoners and two machine guns. Front remained lively near Lens with heavy artillery and gas shelling, while German counterfire waned as raids continued.

Cottage cheese campaign targets North Dakota farms

Washington April 22 The Bureau of Animal Industry has named Mrs. Mabel Hollis of Fargo to promote cottage cheese production and use in North Dakota. She joins 46 other women agents in a national drive with Miss Gertrude Van Hoesen leading the Central Western region. The effort, linked with the U S Food Administration, seeks to save meat by boosting cottage cheese made from skim milk or buttermilk. Vice President Thomas R Marshall will attend a loyalty conference in Bismarck the first week with 15 000 home guards and citizens slated for July war work events.

Aviation Soldier Boy Makes Arrest

Private Curtis E. Howell and his wife, en route home to Plentywood Montana on a leave, arrested Abraham Levine on the train near Williston for disloyal remarks about the war. Levine, held on $2,000 bond, awaits a May 23 hearing in County Jail. Howell, stationed at Kelly Field Texas, praised his division and urged home front support for troops, including sending pipes and tobacco rather than cigarettes.
