Immigrant colonists surge westward by rail in 1912
In March and early April 1912, 2344 immigrant cars carrying the belongings of 11720 colonists moved through St Paul and Minneapolis via Great Northern Northern Pacific Milwaukee and St Paul and Soo Line. The flow favored the Northwest with routes from Chicago less active, as officials anticipate similar volumes in the next two weeks. Officials credit publicity and civic efforts by Northwestern states and development leagues for boosting settler arrivals.
