Williston hosts David Goldstein of Boston for a Thursday April 25 lecture at 8 30 pm at Gates Opera House. once a Socialist party member he will explain his reasons for leaving the party and expound socialist doctrine. He will take questions after. Ladies invited. Admission 25 cents.
The second annual Valley City Chautauqua will take place in the grove north of town from July 12 to 21. Prominent speakers and entertainments are planned with improved facilities including transportation, playgrounds, swimming, boats, electric lighting and pure water. A state Boy Scouts encampment will be on site. Fifty one events are planned for an admission of $2.50, with free camping.
Superintendent Geo Fr Forster entertained a half score or more of friends Saturday evening with a three course luncheon and a program of games and stories. The birthday event will be long remembered by the guests who enjoyed hospitality on the occasion.
A faulty fuse caused scorching of boards and near blaze at Leland Cafe on First Street East Monday night. Steel ceiling was installed over original wiring, leaving wires in place. Dorothy the electrician found the burnt fuse as the initial fault. Mr and Mrs L N Amsberry of Wheelock visited the city for shopping and business.
A civic call explains flies spread disease including tuberculosis typhoid and diphtheria and that a single breeding pair in April can yield billions by August. It urges each household to cooperate in extermination, noting screening indoors and keeping filth out to jail the fly and protect children.
Two weeks remain to finish staging and rehearsal for the amateur opera at Star Theatre. Cast and chorus near perfection with costumes and scenery budgeted to show the grandeur of the production. Tickets priced 50 cents to 1.00 for May 3 and 4 shows, under Prof Onstad’s musical direction.

Eight hundred signatures on a petition backing early closing were reported as Williston clerks and bookkeepers are reminded of a meeting at K P Hall next Wednesday at 8 15 PM. All ladies in clerical roles are urged to attend.
County banks show interest in a rural school agricultural contest organized by County Superintendent Tatem. Donations of three to five dollars are pledged to buy seed potatoes and seed corn for students, with Farmers Bank of Ray offering two special prizes of five dollars each for best potatoes and best corn in Nelson district.
Williston Civic League members engage school children in spring and summer activities. The group, now about 100 members, plans flower and vegetable garden contests and prizes for best kept back yards while expanding programs in literature, music, and community service. The report notes improvements to library grounds, a rest room, county fair involvement, local concerts, National Evenings, and funding for a piano at Library Hall. A Weather Bureau weekly report for Williston, N C shows a 55 high and 21 low, 36 average, with 1.60 inches of precipitation for the week ending April 17, 1912.
Albert J. Staine and Alice Halliday both of Williston obtain a marriage license. William Atol and Nellie Lyons both of Williston also receive a license.
Attorney Alfred J. Stafne and Miss Alice Halliday, prominent local figures, were married Sunday morning at 10 at the Halliday home on 620 Fourth Street West. Rev Frank Hollett officiated. Best man Liver Otesa and bridesmaid Miss Lyds Halliday attended. The couple plans a ten day honeymoon to the Twin Cities Chicago and Iowa points aboard No. 2 after a brief breakfast with close friends present.
Philadelphia April 14 Theo Roosevelt secures sixty seven of Pennsylvania seventy six national convention delegates. Fifty five district and twelve at large delegates back his campaign as Taft loses ground statewide except Lancaster and Philadelphia. Wilson dominates Democratic primaries with seventy four of seventy six Baltimore delegates. Champ Clark gains remaining two from the twenty eighth district. Initial reports misattributed Harmon wins.
Chi Sigma entertained at a progressive grand nula on Main Street Monday evening with Misses Metcalf Olaon Eyolfson Evans and Ahlers as hostesses. Forty guests attended tea tables for a pleasant evening ending the social season. Luncheon followed featuring substantial fare and a coffee that stood as a crowning feature.
Decorated with purple and white to highlight the electric stage, Gates hall hosted the after Lent ball by Williston Lodge 1214 of the Elks on Friday evening. Over fifty couples attended as Anna Bell and Maggie Shea distributed red and white carnations on stage while punch was served in a back bower.
The Civic League literary section presents a Scandinavian evening at the Library Auditorium on April 23. The program features literary and musical numbers by Scandinavian authors, a male quartet performing Swedish national songs, Swedish folk dances in costume, and a talk by Misa Anna Peterson who recently returned from a trip to Norway and Sweden. Don’t miss it.
The autograph will of Knute Lee who died in Norway on January 26 has been probated. He leaves a farm near Wheelock and about 33 000 dollars deposited in a Wheelock bank. Six hundred dollars go to three Seattle nieces while the rest funds aid poor settlers. Executors named are William Raymond and Mr. and Mrs. L X N Ansberry.
Born Saturday April 13 to Mr and Mrs John Page a ten pound son. At this writing the newborn is said to set six galleys of solid copy if he has good copy.
The B. and T. Club met yesterday with Mrs. C. A. Mansfield. The program focused on Jacob Riis and the tenant question, and the afternoon session arranged next year's club program.
A local proposal urges a six o clock closing to benefit the public and clerks while helping the band improve. Members note the band is strong financially and planning a Friday evening concert, but demand substantial practice time and earlier shifts to avoid long hours.
The State versus Henry P. Hanson, a Cottonwood Lake farmer, faced a hearing in Justice Field’s court with a continuance to April 25. The complaint charges Hanson with obtaining an $800 real estate mortgage and note by false pretense. Bonds set at $300 were signed by O D Foss of Farmers & Merchants State Bank and John T. Moen. State’s attorney Braatelien. defense Palmer Craven and Burns.
The Trefoil club of twelve high school girls will perform Breezy Point, a three act comedy, at the Library next Saturday evening. Proceeds fund library picture purchases. Officers include Miss Toftley Mater, Miss Reba Rawson Scribe, Miss Kate Prebble Financier. Admission is thirty five cents.
Weather bulletin notes past heavy rainfall and snow restored moisture balance. By March 31 moisture stood 0.79 inch below normal, but through April 15 the area received 1.76 inches of rain and snow, placing April at 1.28 inches ahead for the month and 0.59 inch above normal for the year. another 0.75 inch in May would bring the season to normal.
D. R. Collins died at his home at 1 30 this morning after a kidney operation and subsequent complications. He leaves a wife and three children. Funeral services will be held at the home Friday afternoon.
Friday afternoon exhibits across grades at Central School and Annex showcased manual training, drawing, map work, and domestic science. Visitors received handmade souvenirs while high school musicians led by Prof. Onsted performed, highlighting progress in art craft and music.
