History of the Continental Navy and early U S maritime force
The Continental Navy began on October 13 1775 when Congress approved ships for coast patrol and attack missions. It formed alongside the Continental Army and issued currency. George Washington reported seizing three ships and Congress later funded two more. The Navy disbanded in 1785 and reemerged with six frigates in 1794, with the Department of the Navy created in 1798. During the War of 1812 British blockade faltered as the U S won at Lake Erie, marking the first fleet capture.
