Continental Telephone Co employees in Sherman held a Saturday farewell for Richard Hovell resident engineer of three years. He leaves for Knoxville Iowa to become district engineer and will be joined by wife and children once housing is found. About 75 employees attended with out of town guests Mr and Mrs Brent Widney of Dallas.
Grayson County Taxpayers Association protested high valuations before the commissioners court. Speaker warned of possible lawsuit to force lower land values tied to Hunnucutt and Associates reappraisal. Whitewright rep J H Gosnell and Ola Mae McFatridge spoke as locals urged equity. Judge Tribble urged fixes at equalization session.
The Whitewright FFA chapter showed at the Trenton FFA Livestock show with Madison Woodruff taking Reserve Champion Santa Gertrudis heifer, Mykel Woodruff second in the 12 month and under Santa Gertrudis class, Lonnie McCartney earning a second in Maine Anjou and fourth in registered Angus, Jeff Wortham fifth in lightweight Hereford, and Dwight Owens seventh in lightweight Angus. Chapter advisors Jack Rogers and Jimmie Reed Butler accompanied them as CPS manager changes were announced for the Northeast division with Charles Mills replacing Clint C. Hennig, who retires December 31 after 25 years with CPS. Mills will oversee 13 counties, with a background in several CPS roles and civic work. The report details Mills and Hennig family ties and community involvement.
The Cemeteries Improvement Fund at First National Bank has $2500 to start after three gifts. Mrs Emory Christian chairs the drive to beautify Oak Hill and City cemeteries as a Whitewright Centennial project, with donors in Whitewright and Houston. Gifts may specify cemetery, funds go to improvement work with weekly donor listings.
Whitewright will host shows for two local car dealers, Edwards Chevrolet and Bob Worthy Ford, featuring 1978 models. Edwards Chevrolet opens Thursday Oct 6 with redesigned Malibu Classic Monte Carlo and four door Chevette. Corvette seen with 25th birthday updates. Caprice Classic and Impala also highlighted. Worthy Ford showcases Fairmont as top 1978 Ford seller, with LTD Granada Pinto trucks and full Ford lineup on display Friday and Saturday Oct 7–8. Coffee doughnuts and cold drinks offered during show days.
Whitewright Tigers edged Van Alstyne 13-0 to open district play and set up Friday’s showdown with Leonard. Stan Smith led 88 rushing yards as the defense stifled the Panthers, holding them to minus 14 rushing yards and 44 passing yards. Leonard enters 0-4, with backs Johnny Woods and Henry Bush, while Smith’s status remains uncertain due to a hip pointer. District game time is 7:30.
