The Whitewright Sun announces Felecia Garvin of Denison as the new editor succeeding Mrs. Darla Howell who left to join Continental Telephone in Iowa. Garvin, Grayson County College journalism grad, previously led Howe Enterprise and Grayson Graphic and served as women’s news reporter for Denison Herald.

Punt Pass and Kick Contest Set for Monday Night

About 150 youths aged eight to 13 will compete in the Punt Pass and Kick event at 7 p.m. Monday at the football stadium. Whitewright residents and others respond to the Centennial project for Oak Hill and City cemeteries. By Tuesday noon the First National Bank held 1236 in the special fund with gifts from many donors including Mrs. Lee Wilborn of Austin and Mrs. R.B. Mack of Ballinger.

Abilene Christian College senior and former resident queen candidate Miss Holly Harper is among ten contenders for Homecoming Queen. The coronation will be October 15 in the chapel. Edwards at CPS 35 Years in Whitewright

Lokey L. Edwards, district manager for Community Public Service in Whitewright since 1952, marks 35 years of service on Sept 15. A native of Farmersville, he rose from ice department worker to district manager and will receive a 35 year pin at December’s awards banquet along with other CPS veterans. He has been active in civic groups including Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, United Fund and Masonic Lodge. Edwards and his wife Alice have two children and two grandchildren.

Trains Spark Grass Fires Behind Local Warehouses

A series of grass fires were reported Monday night along the Katy tracks behind Farley Grain Company and the Community Public Service warehouse. Fires were apparently started by sparks from passing trains.

Bobby Spencer Dies In Train Accident

Bobby Joe Spencer, 23, of Whitewright, was killed September 29 when run over by three diesel units and about four and a half freight cars of MRT Railroad near the local football stadium. Police and Justice of the Peace declared him dead. an investigation by Whitewright Police is underway. Funeral services were held Saturday at Barnhart Funeral Home. Survivors include a widow Debra, his parents, two sons, a grandmother, a brother, and three sisters.

Flag Football Game Set at Whitewright High School

A flag football game is scheduled October 13 at 7 p.m. at the Whitewright football field featuring Whitewright MYF boys and friends against community coaches businessmen and ministers. Whitewright First National Bank Deposits Near $10 Million

Whitewright's First National Bank nears the $10 million deposit mark with deposits at 9,634,299 as of Sept 30, up from 8,674,404 a year earlier. Loans rose to 6,444,800, up 202,042. Other area banks also show growth including Tom Bean's First National, Bell's, Howe, and Van Alstyne's First National with varied increases in deposits and loans.

Tribble Backs Help for Tax Valuation Woes in Grayson

County Judge Les Tribble told Whitewright Rotary he will strive to aid property owners upset over Grayson county real property revaluation by Hunnicutt and Associates. He outlined the process including 15 minute hearings, hearings with the board of equalization, and the steps from appraised to assessed value to meet a $2,612,000 budget. He urged residents to contact the firm for interviews and, if needed, pursue the county appeal process.

Whitewright Tigers roll past Leonard 27-4 en route to Honey Grove

Whitewright defeated Leonard 27-4 as star back Stan Smith rested with a hip pointer. McCollum, Stader and Spann led a steady offense and a stout defense, despite a winded kicker Pittman missing an extra point. Honey Grove looms Friday with an open date to follow on Oct. 14.
