September sales tax payments show Whitewright up 22 percent year to date with a $615 gain over last year and total revenue for the year at $15 230.97. Tom Bean, Van Alstyne, Bells and Howe also report year to date increases, with Van Alstyne up 6 percent and Howe up 33 percent.
Three Texoma Regional Planning Commission representatives will assist applicants for a federal grant at Whitewright High School counselor's room from 9 to 11 a.m. The $46 594 grant funds eight 40 hour weekly positions at Oak Hill and City cemeteries for residents 18 and over in Grayson Fannin or Cook counties who are low income and unemployed.
Grayson County College will offer a two session defensive driving course on consecutive Thursdays starting Sept 22. The program runs 6 to 10 p.m. in the Nursing Auditorium, costs 10 dollars, and is taught by David Rice. Completion yields a 10 percent reduction on family auto insurance. Registration is 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday in Room 105, Business building.
A Texoma Regional Planning Commission representative will be at the School on Thursday from 9 to 11 to advise applicants and assist with job applications. Eight jobs for both men and women are available under a federal grant to the Oak Hill and City cemeteries improvement and beautification program. The positions cover several months and various types of work.
Whitewright invites boys and girls aged 8 to 13 to register for a punt pass and kick contest. Winners in each age group will advance to district in Denison on Oct 15 and may reach state regional and national finals, with the national final during halftime of the New Orleans Super Bowl. Local sponsor Bob Worthy Ford and principal Howard Hodge Jr. oversee registration, with blanks available at the middle or grade school. Families are urged to attend the Oct 10 competition at Tigers Field to support participants.
Whitewright's FFA chapter with 60 members names Jimmy Turner senior at Whitewright high school as president for the coming year. Advisors Jim Butler and Jack Rogers flag a fall stock show at Trenton with over 10 project cattle, mainly steers, to compete. Other officers are Kyle Rogers vice president Lonnie McCartney secretary Mark Neathery treasurer C W Robinson reporter and Mark Woodruff sentinel.
An enthusiastic Whitewright United Way drive plans for a record outreach, meeting with Sam Montgomery and Sandra Shaw to set a $4,756 goal. Officers include Carol Makks treasurer Peggy Partridge secretary, with a large volunteer list aiding local agencies such as Boy Scouts Camp Fire Girls Cub Scouts Red Cross and Salvation Army.
A list of residents including Stephens, Larry Threadgill, Judy Simpson, Peggy Gattis, Linda Jester, Gina Hicks, Faye LeDane, Janis Emerson, Patricia Hollo way, Mike Herber, Carolyn Slaughter, Wilma Ballard, Brenda Layman, Sherry Pennell and Edith Mae Holloway appears alongside a note from Mrs. Shaw on White Wright community benefits via county agencies. The United Way is framed as a voluntary drive funding health welfare and recreational services, emphasizing volunteers and the call for contributions. Recent visits describe Miss Debbie and Denise Pettijohn spending time with grandparents in Sherman, and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bodine hosting relatives in Center before a weekend trip to Jacksonville, Ark. Pre game tickets for Friday night football in Van Alstyne are available at Whitewright High School. Prices are 1 for students and 1.50 for adults until Friday noon, with gate tickets at Panther field 2 each.
Whitewright reports two Tiger stars Fullback Stan Smith and Halfback Lonnie McCartnery near full recovery from back injuries suffered against Little Elm. Coach Parker expects both to play Friday at Van Alstyne as Gary Tillett passes for three touchdowns and Jeff Daniels, Reid Pittman and others help Tigers build a 26-0 lead before late scoring.
