A farmer brought a 127 boll late cotton stalk into Sun office, with no insect damage and blooms not yet opening. If weather cooperates, yields could rise.
Whitewright-Leonard football game at Leonard Friday night tickets are 35c for students and 75c for others, 50c student and $1 for adults at the gate. Tigers lost 13-6 to Celeste Blue Devils last Friday, while Leonard fell 19-7 to Van Alstyne. First home game Sept 27 vs Farmersville at Bryant Field, then Wylie and Princeton. Reserved seats renewals due next week at 2.50 per year or 5.00 for two, unsold seats after. Superintendent S T Montgomery Jr confirms.
The Sam Rayburn Library in Bonham will be formally dedicated on October 9 at 2:30 p.m. with expected national political figures, including former President Harry S. Truman, and most Texas congressional members slated to attend. The $0.5 million library sits on a two block tract in West Bonham, near the former public school site.
Baltimore Sun reports a new vaccine by Dr. Winston H. Price of Johns Hopkins that prevented colds caused by the JH virus in 80 percent of 400 people in controlled tests. The JH virus accounted for about 30 percent of colds in two years of investigation.
Carrol M. Shanks, president of Prudential Insurance Co. of America, urged the Federal Reserve to tighten credit to battle inflation. He warned that tighter monetary policy could risk unemployment and a recession, but argued stronger controls are needed to curb rising prices and restore restraint in costs.
Idaho Governor Smylie sent a box of potatoes to Texas Governor Price Daniel but the card attached misspelled Daniel’s name. The note emphasizes that the gift remains well meant despite the error.
Whitewright residents attending colleges this semester include East Texas State College Commerce with Ralph Hughes family and several students. Universities listed are Texas at Austin Beverly Bassett and North Texas State College at Denton Dixie Bassett and Y B Kaiser. Other attendees include Jimmie Nossaman at Oklahoma Norman and Larry Cooper at A and M College Station. Funeral services were held Thursday at 10 a m in Sherman for Clarence Lee Wolfe 61 of 301 Magnolia Sherman who died Tuesday in a Sherman hospital He was a native of Sherman The Rev Edward Barcus conducted the services Pallbearers were Owen Q Smith Ray Locke Les Tribble Bob Langford and Byron Hill Burial was in West Hill Cemetery Sherman Born December 17 1896 Wolfe was the son of Mrs Alice Wolfe and the late Jacob C Wolfe He attended Sherman schools and for 12 years was employed by Locke The Timer He was a member of the Methodist Church Surviving include four sons and daughters and siblings with four grandchildren
Memorial service for Mrs. Nora Valentine Graves 87 will be held at 4:00 p m today at the City Cemetery directed by Barnheart Funeral Home. Rev George H Walker of Denison will conduct the service. Mrs Graves died September 8 in Houston and her body was cremated. Born September 17 1869 in Orangeville she was Grayson College graduate and 52 years in public school work before retiring in 1939 then moving to Houston. Surviving are a son C C Graves of Richmond California and two great grandchildren.
Washington reports Asian flu vaccine production trails the mid‑September target with 5,430,442 doses released. Public Health Service maintains year end goal of 85,000,000 doses by December 31 as production proceeds as expected per Surgeon General Leroy E. Burney.
Three state agencies urge schools and media to promote the Texas school bus stop law. The rule requires drivers to stop when meeting or overtaking a school bus stopped to load or unload children unless in city limits or on divided highways. Buses display yellow color and flashing lights when stopping.
The menu for Monday through Friday features Sliced Roast Beef and Gravy with buttered carrots and English peas, hot rolls, and ice cream Monday. Tuesday offers Hot Dogs with Baked Beans slaw carrot sticks and chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Wednesday includes Red Beans with Spam kraut baked apple cornbread and cinnamon rolls. College Station report notes September 30 as the deadline to file for a Federal gasoline tax refund on farming use since July 1 1956. Form 2240 is available from county agents or IRS offices. Claims require accurate figures and supporting records, with submissions to the district Internal Revenue office handling income taxes. The 1956 Congress enacted the refund law.
A five week fire fighting course began Wednesday night in Bells drawing about 12 local volunteers. An instructor from Texas A. and M. College led a detailed session. A Saturday afternoon event will showcase three cotton stripper types in a field on the C. B. Bryant farm northeast of town. The John Deere International Harvester and Southern Harvester machines will be demonstrated. Bill White said farmers and others are invited to attend.
A mid night fire at Holmes Connelly's corner drug store caused heavy stock and fixture damage with minimal damage to the building. The blaze started in a back room downstairs and was controlled by the Trenton department with Leonard firemen assisting. The owner will repair and restock soon.
Roy Westerfield, Sherman Social Security district manager, announced changes from the 1957 amendments. A wife not living with her husband may qualify for benefits if at least 62, not receiving benefits, and separated. Ministers gain an extended election period to April 15, 1959 with new income definitions including fair rental value of living quarters. The Sherman office at room 503 Commercial Building offers help 8:30 to 4:30, Monday through Friday.
The Air Force said its first intercontinental missile squadron, a 500 man unit, will be organized late this year and equipped with the 5,000 mile range Snark. The squadron will be run by Strategic Air Command in Omaha with site details pending. A large production contract of 73 million dollars for the weapon has been awarded to Northrop. The report also notes upcoming weapon firings in Florida and references U.S. efforts in the missile race with the Soviet Union.
The Whitewright United Fund board met to plan the 1957 campaign set to begin mid October. Committees include advanced gifts led by Clint Hennig Sears Anderson and Russell Summers and a kickoff breakfast on October 15 at 7:30 a.m. at Ayres Cafe.

Ames ia Andy Anderson receives a telegram from his shoe company employer on his 97th birthday promising his salesman's commission would be doubled when he turns 100. He plans to collect on the contract and has spent 76 years covering most of Iowa. His son retired at 72.
