Whitewright Chamber funds window repair and Christmas plans

Chuck Wilson reported about one thousand dollars in pledges for a library window repair project sponsored by the Whitewright Chamber of Commerce. The total cost is estimated at two thousand three hundred to three thousand dollars, depending on work. The September meeting chaired by Charles Truksa discussed October committee heads and planned downtown decorations for Christmas. Truksa noted East Texas Chamber of Commerce Day on Oct. 18 with discount tickets, and the chamber voted to join that regional body. Participants included Anne Logan and others.

Continental Telephone seeks Texas rate increase

Continental Telephone Co of Texas filed Sept 10 with the Public Utility Commission for about 52 million dollars more in rates. President James F. Miles cited service upgrades inflation competition and higher operating costs. The firm has invested over 109 million in Texas and plans another 60 million in 1976 1978 for service improvements and expansion.

Whitewright Dog Cat Clinic Vaccination Drive

The annual dog cat vaccination clinic sponsored by the Whitewright FFA will be held October 2 at Gattis Clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rabies shots cost $2.50 each, with proceeds supporting the FFA chapter’s program and facilities.

Whitewright Community Club summer meeting notes

Members gathered at Firemen's Hall with Mrs. Florence Lewis hosting. Vice president Mrs. Fred Garner led in the president's absence as Mrs. Edith Grider. Members shared summer happenings and future goals. A Bicentennial quilt drawing was announced for the next meeting. Refreshments were served to 18 members and two visitors, with Mrs. Ora Murphy slated as next hostess. Mrs. C B Robinson entered Sherman Community Hospital for tests.

Benefit Softball Game Set By CB Club

The Triangle CB Club, with members from Whitewright, Trenton, Tom Bean, Luella and Sherman, hosts the Quad K CB Club of Sherman for a benefit softball game Sunday Sept 19 at 2 30 p.m. at American Legion Park Whitewright. Donations aid Billy Joe Holland of Luella paralyzed by a gunshot. All club members will be dressed as women.

Combs Family Tour Graces New Orleans Riverfront

Mr and Mrs Leon Combs and Leah spent last week in New Orleans enjoying a ride aboard the Natchez the largest passenger steam boat built this century along the Mississippi River. They toured Jackson Square Basilica and noted historic surroundings amid the river passage.

Rotary Hears About Bonham VA Center

Bonham Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center director Banks J. Paul outlined the facility’s scope including a 78 bed general hospital with 39 medical beds, 24 surgical beds, 15 psychiatric beds, and a four bed ICU unit plus a 10 bed respirator care unit. A 100 bed nursing home unit serves chronically ill veterans. a 53 person waiting list signals rising need. The center also runs 230 domiciliary beds for aging and disabled veterans with an average resident age of 60.5. Outpatient visits jumped from about 2,000 in 1970 to 15,112 last year and are projected to 18,500 by 1980. The staff numbers 303 full time, with a $6.6 million annual budget led by payroll of $4.59 million.
