Whitewright Council Bans Public Drinking in City Areas

The Whitewright City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting alcoholic beverage consumption in public places after a council session in which Chief Leroy Du Quette urged action to curb gatherings in areas like the Dairy Queen lot and nearby alleys. Joe Wolfe opposed, citing overbroad wording. The meeting also updated stop and yield signs on Pine and Melody streets and proclaimed Breath of Life Week.

Tapps Visit New Orleans

Mr and Mrs Jerry Tapp spent the weekend in New Orleans enjoying a city tour and a program by Al Hirt and Pete Fountain. The trip marked their wedding anniversary and repeated a honeymoon visit from years past. Jeffrery Tonya and Shonda stayed with their grandparents Mr and Mrs Paul Tapp in Waxahachie.

Oklahoma Gunman Returns To Rob Tom Bean Bank

Floyd Garland, 26, robbed The First National Bank of Tom Bean for the second time in three months. He was arrested in Yuba, Oklahoma after wrecking his car to elude a roadblock. About $10,000 stolen. money recovered when it fell from Garland’s car and turned over to FBI. Garland linked to June robbery and to Robert Christman, who was convicted in August. No injuries reported in the era’s fourth bank robbery in seven years.

Susan Floyd Elected G.A. President

Susan Floyd was elected president of the G.A. s of the First Baptist church in Whitewright at a Wednesday meeting. Officers include Patricia Griffis vice president Jamie Hedges secretary Donna Staley treasurer Donna Whipple reporter Cindy Almond song leader Dani LeDane Teresa Stephens party chairmen. A bake sale is planned for Sept 11 in downtown Whitewright to raise funds for G.A. jackets. Jeannette Bowen Pat Jester and Sherry Pennell are group leaders. G.A.s meet weekly Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

Firemen Buy World Building in Grand Prairie Texas

The State Firemen's and Fire Marshals' Association of Texas has purchased the Sports World building in Grand Prairie. The 24,000 sq ft structure was bought from Gulf Western, Paramount's parent. Association president Bob O Burke announced the purchase, with Cliff Johnson and Roy Orr aiding negotiations. The building will host a museum of antique firefighting apparatus and open by January after remodeling.

Area Women Receive Nursing Certificates

Thirty two area women received nursing certificates September 3 from Grayson County Junior College School of Vocational Nursing. The candlelight ceremony at Grace Lutheran Church Denison featured Dr James Addy as speaker. Mrs Grace Cole pinned the class, with instructors Alicia Travis and Jean Rosenberg assisting and the students adopting the Florence Nightingale ethos that the patient is the purpose of their work.

Whitewright Tigers crush Farmersville 39 26 then face Princeton

Whitewright improved to 1 0 in district play after a 39 26 win over Farmersville. Quarterback Steve Hodge threw for 222 yards while Tigers ran 136 yards on the ground and held Farmersville to 6 in the fourth quarter. They travel Friday to Princeton to meet a strong running attack led by J R Parks Larry Mayfield and Mark Talland. Ricky A Rice led Whitewright rushing with 40 yards and 65 receiving yards.
