Whitewright residents report active harvest as cotton and corn move to market. Cotton picking started Monday with gins crowded. corn buyers and pickers work day and night. Wednesday white corn at 2.25 a bushel, yellow corn 1.75. pay for cotton pickers: 2.50 per hundred.
Boy Scouts nationwide prepare for a new activity year with stocktaking and planning as more than half a million men organize to engage over a million and a half boys in hiking camping and scout programs Whitewright troop schedules a Monday 7:30 PM meeting at the scout hut inviting old scouts and all boys twelve or older to join membership efforts around the country
Senator Kilgore urged the return of price controls and said continued high prices could trigger economic disaster and even public revolt. President Truman should back Congress in reimposing ceilings, while Rep. Price warned big business fears high production costs and wages. Kaiser accused steelmakers of withholding capacity, warning a steel shortage will depress production and raise prices.

Houston. Registration for the first term of the new Texas State University for Negroes began with prospects for the largest enrollment in the history of Southern Negro colleges. Acting President Allen Norton Jr. said final figures early next week might reach 3000, though facilities cover only about 2500. Classes run 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Many applicants were turned down for not meeting entrance requirements matching the University of Texas at Austin.
The agriculture Department estimates this year’s cotton crop at 11,849,000 bales, with last month’s forecast at 11,844,000. Compared to last year’s 8,640,000 bales, and the 10 year average of 12,390,000, the forecast includes 1.2 percent abandoned acreage after July 1 and a lint yield of 269 pounds per acre, versus 235.3 last year and 250.6 the 10-year average. Texas prospects fell 50,000 bales to 3,150,000 with an average 183 pounds per acre. 1946 Texas crop was 1,669,000 bales. Late August rains slowed opening but encouraged fruiting in northern counties.
AUSTIN Gov Beauford H Jester said most applications to reinstate licenses lost for drunken driving or other causes are denied and many more are refused than granted. Restoration requires Governor Board of Pardons and Paroles and Department of Public Safety approval. He cited a case where a man who had joined Alcoholics Anonymous regained his license.
At a Texas hearing the State Board of Insurance Commissioners examined high hail and windstorm losses and the capacity of companies to write expanded coverage. Marvin Hall noted insurers face limited capacity, some boosting capital, while discussion covered term policy changes, unearned premium reserves, and more one year policies amid rising property values and rates. 1946 inland Texas losses on extended coverage policies exceeded premiums by 117 percent.
The Producers Cotton Gin, a cooperative, reports ginning 9 041 bales in the 1947 season. Manager C J Zahl says the plant may finish late next week and believes no other gin has produced that much cotton in a single season.
Plans to promote the manufacture of the Duesenberg automobile were announced in Indianapolis. The car is described as unable to sell for less than 25,000 dollars and likely to cost more. The Duesenberg factory in Indianapolis closed in 1938.
The Whitewright Public Schools opened with 310 pupils, 93 in the High School and 217 in the Grammar School. Some students will transfer in after harvest. Grammar School departments begin with new system under Herman Bedford, listing faculty by grade. High School staff includes Caraway, Gentry, Barker, Montgomery, Neathery, Roddy, Darwin, and Blanton temporary replacement.
Victory for the amendment to set up a 60 million dollar, 30 year college funds program was shown in Texas official canvass with 102531 for and 97318 against. Dallas attorney R Guy Carter filed suit to restrain issuance of bonds, arguing the amendment was multifarious. State Rep Preston Smith voiced continued opposition.
Washington reports a historic test as the aircraft carrier Midway launches a captured German V-2 rocket from sea near Bermuda. The 28 000 pound weapon flew 350 miles, signaling a new era in naval warfare and suggesting battleships could be surpassed by rocket firing carriers.

A burning front porch heated an automobile tire causing an explosion that triggered a fire alarm in Towson Maryland. The blaze awakened Anna G Roehmer who alerted firefighters. Census Bureau reports the civilian population at 142,061,000 with 1,250,000 in the armed forces. Rural-farm population fell 2,911,000 over seven years while urbanites rose 9,436,000. Non-white growth outpaced whites. median age rose to 30. the West led gains at 24.7 percent.
Sherman reports the 1947 Grayson County tax rate remains 95 cents, same as 1946, with levies split among general fund 23, jury 7, courthouse and jail bonds 4, road and bridge bonds 3, airport bonds 1, old indebtedness 7 and 1927 bonds 17, road maintenance 33, plus a 25 cent county poll tax added to the state poll. District school taxes are collected from 126 common districts, all 50 cents or more except White Rock Negro School.

Dan Smith manager of the White Wright Manufacturing Company said nineteen women are now employed at the plant and more workers may be needed as orders for garments rise. The plant is handling a large children’s dress order and expects fall and winter orders to increase. Equipment shortages have been overcome and working conditions are reported ideal with employees pleased.
A Commerce Department report shows American personal income rising to a record 197 billion dollars annually in July, up two billion from June and twenty billion from last year, driven by higher wages and farm income. The Agriculture Department notes a tight corn crop will lift meat and dairy prices, with wheat output estimated at a historic 1.41 billion bushels.
Secretary of State George C. Marshall said only Congress can authorize stopgap aid Europe needs urgently before year end. He implied a congressional call to President Truman, with the final say resting with the President as Republicans refuse a special session.
