The Pigskin Club has sold about a hundred memberships at three dollars each to aid the Tigers with meals and welfare after games. High school students painted storefronts to publicize tonight’s game, drawing complaints about mural damage.
The Whitewright Parent-Teacher Association outlines goals for 1954 55 including increased participation and fundraising. The executive committee meets September 13 at 3 00 p m and the first meeting September 21 at 7 30 p m will honor teachers and patrons. A membership drive runs through September with dues at 50 cents per person, and the class with most memberships may win a cash prize for its fund. Lee H. Smith presides.
Exactly 400 bales of cotton had been ginned in Whitewright by the Donigan gin up to 9 this morning, a gain of 278 bales from last Thursday. The Kim Bell gin was not operating due to remodeling delays. Cotton sold for 33 1/2 cents per pound and cottonseed rose to 70 dollars per ton, up two dollars.
Texas has about 1 066 000 veterans, sixth largest in the nation. The Veterans Administration said the U S totals 20 850 000 veterans overall, with New York at 2 080 000 and California, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Ohio also ahead of Texas.

At a 1953 meeting, donors who gave five dollars to the Whitewright Homecoming received refund checks from C. B. Bryant III, then president of the Chamber of Commerce. The Homecoming began in 1952 with Grayson College reunion organizers seeking ongoing annual events, but tensions with Grayson exes and scheduling concerns led to changes and a failed second year.
Rev. Bruce Cushman resigned as Kentuckytown Baptist Church pastor on Aug 29. A missionary couple Rev and Mrs Maurice Martin spoke to the congregation. New officers and teachers for the coming year were elected, with J. C. Whipple as Sunday school superintendent and several Mrs. Whipples and Miss Pool named for roles. Services are at 10 am and 7 pm Sundays, prayer meeting 8 pm Wednesdays. public invited.
New York cotton closed 27 to 41 points higher on active buying after a lower than expected government crop report. The Agriculture Department pegs the 1954 cotton crop at 11,832,000 bales of 500 pounds, 848,000 bales less than last month. Weather remains sunny and dry across the belt hindering growth and prompting premature boll opening. Farmers use up to a quarter of U S motor fuel.
The two Whitewright white schools enrolled 348 students on opening day. The high school had 109 pupils and the grade school 239 with expected late enrollments. G F Bass joined as history teacher and basketball coach. The Nego school opened two weeks earlier with 28 pupils.
Funeral services for Robert B. Gordon 94 were held at Earnheart Chapel with Rev. Lee H. Smith and Rev. W. W. Alverson officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery. He died after a 10 day illness at his son in law and daughter Allen T Short and Mrs. Short in Whitewright. He was born July 16 1860 in Clinton Arkansas and was among the first rural mail carriers out of Whitewright. He leaves three daughters two sons two brothers two sisters seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Theresa Stevens, 30, battered her drunken husband Thomas with a rolling pin, leaving a lump on his head. The couple appeared before Judge Joseph B. Hermes seeking a $1000 peace bond, the judge noting it was a rare case.
The Defense Department asked for 23000 draftees for November, the same monthly quota since July. Since the Korean War began, 1,812,430 men have been drafted, with 1,731,000 to the Army and all November calls allocated to Army strength maintenance after allowances for enlistments and re-enlistments.
Local merchants continued the share the profits jackpot day series in week 24. Saturday will feature jackpot gifts and special gifts from Chamber of Commerce members, with strong crowds and previous Saturdays drawing larger turnouts.
Grady Kidwell of Leonard has bought the Humble Service Station on Highway 69 North from John R. Morse and took charge Tuesday. Kidwell, an experienced station operator and mechanic, will offer washing greasing tire repair and battery work along with Humble gasolines and motor oils. Morse, who ran the station about a year, has moved to Sherman.
A donkey baseball game is planned for Tuesday September 14 at Bryant Field at 8 pm in Wright with Ever heart Thornhill Post American Legion and Earl Fields as sponsors. Post commander Fields invites participation or spectating from the community.
Governor Shivers told reporters that conservative Democrats will lead next week's state convention and run the party for two years. He praised his primaries victory over Yarborough and denied Republican help swung the race. He urged removal of Democratic chair Mitchell to aid a South-friendly 1956 candidate.
Secretary Douglas McKay announced bids will open Oct 13 for oil and gas leasing of submerged lands in the outer continental shelf off Louisiana. A total of 748000 acres in 199 tracts are offered with a minimum bonus of 15 per acre and 523000 acres for sulphur leasing.
The Whitewright Tigers host Commerce in the season opener at Bryant Field at 8 pm. It marks a third straight year two teams start the schedule together. Last year Whitewright won 20 to 0 after a 0-0 initial meeting. Starting lineup includes Bennett Musser McKnight Sanderson Garner Clem Reeves Parnell Brown Dixon Hughes. Connie Andrew benched with a broken toe but expected to return in a week or two.
London reports the British government declares war on killer drivers. All road deaths suspected of negligence will be investigated as possible murder in Greater London with senior detectives and Scotland Yard support. Findings go to the director of public prosecutions for charging decisions.
Rev. Newton V. Cole notes Grayson County requests further March of Dimes gifts to continue polio patient care. Whitewright exceeded its local quota but other communities failed, prompting an August emergency drive extended to September 20 with donations at First National Bank earmarked for the March of Dimes.
Leo Sheiner a 44 year old Brooklyn born lawyer was disbarred after an hour long hearing for refusing to answer questions of loyalty in a first of its kind action. Circuit Judge Vincent C Giblin ordered the disbarment.
