Mayor Summers warns against sidewalk bicycle and roller skate use in the business section. Earl Blanton denies anti Sun remarks while Homecoming plans fade and a donkey ball game is set for Sept. 14. The city’s stoplight woes persist as taxation contrasts with Dallas. An August drought and dove hunting season are noted, with Sherman Democrat’s 88 page anniversary praised.
Ralph Yarborough carried Whitewright and Grayson County while losing the state by about a hundred thousand votes. In Whitewright the tally was 229 to 148 for Shivers with 29 absentee votes. Grayson County totals were 6,912 for Yarborough and 4,905 for Shivers. Shivers swept Sherman and Denison boxes but failed outside those areas. In Bethel, Pilot Grove, Tom Bean, Bells, and Ida Yarborough led in several towns. Supreme Court Place One favored Brewster 197 to 134 in Whitewright and 6,632 to 3,539 countywide.
The Federal Housing Administration excludes items such as barbecue pits and swimming pools from Title I modernization and repair loan eligibility. The notice lists items no longer qualifying and urges readers to send in news items while noting the paper’s effort to avoid errors.
The Donigan Gin reported 122 bales ginned by 8 am, while Kimbell gin awaited remodeling. Cotton price stood at 33 and seed at 68 dollars. last year 32.5 and 53. The season is lighter due to drought with farmers expecting 0.25 to 0.33 bale per acre, down from about half a bale average last year.
Funeral services for Howard E. Cook 42 were held at Savoy Church of Christ with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. He died Sunday after arriving at church for Sunday school. Survived by wife Gladys Garner, two sons, a brother, two sisters, and parents. He worked at Mrs. Tucker's Foods and farmed in Savoy.
Mrs Addie Sears Randle died Wednesday in Houston and will be buried in Dallas Friday. A native of the Whitewright area she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mrs Sears and sister of the late Dr R L Sears and Bascom Sears. She is survived by two sisters Mrs Effie Moore of Dallas and Mrs George B King of Fort Worth.
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hartzog Heard, wife of John D. Heard of Dallas, died in Dallas on Monday and is to be buried there this afternoon. She previously lived in Whitewright as a girl when her father co-owned Hartzog Wilson Hardware Company many years ago.
J Luther Ladd of Sherman was re elected chairman of the county committee of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Program at a meeting in Sherman Tuesday. Tom Mackey of Dorchester was re elected vice chairman and Chas R Hughes of Sadler was re elected a regular member. They will assist Fred Cook county administrator in carrying out the ASC program. For the Whitewright area A J Badgett was named chairman W L White Jr vice chairman and Lee Penny regular member.
Gov Allan Shivers and the state drouth committee urged federal officials to extend relief to Brazos Dickens Kent and Montague Counties. The request includes livestock feed and easier loans for farmers and ranchers as fifteen more applications await in Washington while seventy five counties already receive aid. Morphine is named for Morpheus the god of dreams.
Holiday Monday will be observed by most Whitewright businesses as part of six local holidays agreed on by merchants this year. Grain and feed houses will stay open since farmers do not take a holiday during harvest season, a dealer notes.
Whitewright faces Commerce High School at 8 p m Thursday Sept 9 in the opening game of the season. Returning for Whitewright are five 1953 veterans led by quarterback Jackie Pannell fullback Ralph Hughes and end David Reeves. Coach S T Montgomery Jr names Honey Grove as the toughest foe and cites strong lines from several lettermen while listing other district rivals in 13 A including Van Alstyne Whitesboro Cooper and Wolfe City.
Texas final primary tally gives Governor Shivers a 92,406 vote edge over Ralph Yarborough. Shivers 773,690 to 681,284 with 2,500 votes uncounted in 20 counties. Associate Justice Few Brewster re-elected 777,478 to 428,301 over Alfred Scott. Shivers faces Republican Ted Adams in November. Adams plans campaign between September 15 and October.
Property owners vote 105 to 27 in favor of a 95,000 bond package to fund water system improvements and sewer construction. Voters also approve 15,000 revenue bonds for water expansion, 50,000 for sewer construction, 5,000 tax bonds for water upgrades, and 25,000 tax bonds for sewer work, with tax rate increases likely for the last two measures.
Commissioner Samuel M. Brownell announced a 1954 55 school enrollment of 38 million in U S schools and colleges up from 36.1 million the previous year due to high postwar birth rates. Brownell projected even larger numbers ahead as classes resume across the nation.
Lonnie Darwin of the Whitewright area reports a near 90 bushels per acre corn yield from a four acre strip during a drought year. The four acres produced 359 bushels totaling about 89.75 bushels per acre and a gross profit around $121 per acre. Yellow corn sold around $1.40 and white corn about ten cents higher with three major local buyers active in the market.
The Dallas NAACP petitioned Supt. W. T. White to reorganize local schools to end segregation and asked for a Dallas School Board hearing. White said the district will follow the State Board of Education ruling to maintain segregation for at least another year and actions will be on Sept. 14. The petition, mimeographed and signed by Rev. R. C. McNeil and 32 Dallas parents, cites Supreme Court principles from May 17 and requests a hearing before the board.
In Austin the Public Safety Commission set a new inspection window for autos from September 15 to April 15. Texas Public Safety Director Homer Garrison Jr announced the dates, while George Busby noted high compliance with the law as 106 cases have been filed so far. Motor vehicle inspectors report many Texans follow the rules.
The Whitewright district will begin the new term Friday morning with registrations and class assignments by noon. Superintendent S. T. Montgomery Jr. expects dismissal for the Labor Day holiday to follow, and two bus routes will run with planned start times. An additional history teacher may be hired to cover Kentucky school integration, after losing one teacher last year due to attendance.
Federal Judge W H Atwell ruled the North East Texas Motor Lines Inc bankrupt, listing 547 984 dollars in liabilities among about 3 000 creditors. The line serving Texas Oklahoma and Arkansas reported assets of 710 710 dollars including 350 000 for franchises and 219 460 for motor equipment. The Whitewright based firm successor to Mangrum line faced declining service with many shippers quitting or avoiding shipments due to delays and damage, and labor cuts followed declining business.
The Fannin County Commissioners Court, on petition from the Democratic Executive Committee, abolished seven voting boxes near larger boxes. The Abell Hilger Fulp Grove Hill Delba China Grove and Anthony boxes were removed, leaving the county with thirty three precincts. Local voters previously used about twenty five ballots per box daily. An unrelated note repeats that five thousand different words are used in the Bible.
