The Whitewright public schools will open Friday Sept 15 with enrollment and classification that morning. New students enroll Friday and are classified over days, with classes starting Monday. A faculty meeting is set for Sept 14 at 1 pm in the high school.
A 38 year old daughter of Clar ence Burden was seriously injured when she ran in front of a mower operated by her father as he cut cane. The leg bone was severed below the knee in Bonham area. First aid by Dr. R. May preceded hospital transfer. Finland has established international telephone links via London and Berlin.
Sherman reports one hundred cotton checks remain to be distributed to cooperators in the Federal retirement program. County agent B F Gray will notify cooperators by letter when their checks arrive, saving time for both parties. A bank list adds difficulty by not indicating ownership status, delaying tallying and endorsement steps with Farm Credit Administration oversight by W R Yeary each Friday.
Texas State Board of Education adopts higher teacher standards for State-aid schools. Teachers must have at least two years of college training and hold a Texas State certificate no lower than six year elementary or four year high school level. Current staff may finish requirements by attending summer programs at approved colleges or universities.
Oak Hill Cemetery Association warns that dues remain unpaid and funds are low. If not paid by September 15, work will stop on unpaid lots and grass will grow on graves. Dues are three dollars, payable at once to any member or at First National Bank.
McKinney youth Leland McCarty aged 26 died at City Hospital from injuries after his team ran away on his Blue Ridge farm. He was thrown into a stalk cutter and badly cut and bruised. Body to Blue Ridge for burial. son of R. I. McCarly.
The Rotary Club of Whitewright discussed road conditions at its Friday meeting. After a program on what Rotary stands for led by John Silman, the club formed a roads committee to study and push a unified community plan, chaired by F. M. Echols with W. E. LaRoe Ray Manning R. T. Pennington F. E. Douglas and J. H. Waggoner.
County Supt. Farris Pirtle and assistants report total enrollment in 101 rural and 11 independent Fannin County schools at 11 999 for the past year with 7 453 in rural and 4 546 in independent schools. State funding equals 16 per pupil, totaling 191 984. Ten school buses will operate this year with routes serving Savoy Honey Grove Trenton Telephone Ladonia and Bonham areas. Riverby Three Point and Leonard districts also run buses supported by local funds and chamber commerce. The salmon packing detail appears as a final unrelated note.
Texas meat supply depends on home raised hogs rather than large scale selling. Experts warn against overreacting to federal hog reduction plans which target big hog states like Iowa and Nebraska, noting Texas pig production centers on home consumption and could face winter shortages if mature hogs are culled indiscriminately.
Up to Thursday morning White Wright reported 1 185 bales of cotton received, with 596 more since last Thursday at about 100 bales daily. A year ago 602 bales had been logged by this date, two years ago 946. Current prices and receipts exceed last year and two years ago as buyers paid 9 cents per pound Thursday morning. The market fluctu fell 2 per bale Tuesday then recovered half the loss Wednesday. Cotton seed dropped from 15.00 to 13.00 per ton.
The White Wright Golf Association begins its club championship 18 hole match play with no entry fee or prizes. Thirty two members are drawn for positions, several receiving byes. First week matchups list include Gladys Ray versus Emmet Gilley and others with byes noted. Sumatra tobacco is grown on extensive European owned estates.
In Dallas more than 600 cotton growers landowners bankers and county agents from Texas Oklahoma Louisiana and Arkansas endorsed the Federal cotton acreage reduction program for 1933 34 as outlined by Cully A Cobb. The plan calls for a 40 percent reduction to about 25 million acres and a crop of 9 to 10 million bales with state county and local associations directing the allotments and compensation via cash rentals.
Red Cross reports 24 dead and 500 injured in the Lower Rio Grande Valley as relief teams rush to Brownsville Rio Hondo Harlingen Matamoros and Port Isabel. Dozens are homeless with 2000 homes damaged or destroyed and disease fears after flood conditions.
New York reports the gold medal design by George De Zayas for the man who struck Huey Long, senator from Louisiana. The awardee’s identity awaits Long’s consent, funded by public subscription with excess to aid Louisiana women’s committee to fight Long. The oval grotesque shows a merman struck by a fist rising from a wash bowl with two faucets.
A Chicago to New York Erie passenger train collided with a milk train in Binghamton New York Tuesday night. Twenty three people died, over 100 were injured, twelve at the scene and eleven more died en route or after. The milk train engineer claimed he did not see the red signal. The impact crushed the wooden coach beside a steel car.
Government permission notes that no land may be planted to cotton unless it yields at least seventy five pounds of lint per acre on average over five years. Credit agencies including the Farm Credit Administration and the Federal Reserve System will withhold credit from nonparticipants in the federal reduction program.
