School resumes for Local students with class counts

Tuesday marks the return to classes for 492 local students. Elementary enrollment is 254 with 31 first graders, 54 second graders, 48 third graders, 44 fourth graders, 27 fifth graders, and 50 sixth graders. High school enrollment totals 238, including 89 junior high pupils, up from 215 last year. The district hired John Dickey as math and science teacher and Harry Vidal to teach social studies.">

Subscription contest ends this week at Sun

Winners of watches include Melinda Stapp Claire Whipple and Samuel Atterbury each selling twelve subscriptions. Bicycle winners are Lisa Earnheart and Dena Wilson. Class of 1939 Reunion in Whitewright Attends 44

Mrs Houston Darwin reports the 30th year reunion of Whitewright High School class of 1939 at Firemen's Hall. Thirteen of the thirty-two members attended with three deceased. Awards honored members for aging and family counts as John Robert Bow won triple awards for youngest child most children and most hairs. A vote to meet again in three years was taken.

County commission approves buried line project and staff hires

The Commissioners Court met in special session to approve a General Telephone Company buried communication lines project in Dixie County and to allocate 50.46 for the county health department supplemental food program. They also authorized a vocational education student hire at 1 per hour and a new assistant county auditor at 3600 per year starting Sept 1. Local angler Ono Krumm and Ed Mull placed third in a Texoma fishing contest with about eight pounds of fish under a two bait handicap.

Mathis Wins Bronze Star SSG Heroism in Vietnam

Thomas Mathis of Whitewright has been awarded the Bronze Star with V device for heroism in Vietnam after an attack near Loikhe. A Tom Bean native, he attended local schools and is linked to siblings Bobby Mathis and Mrs Hughes in Whitewright and Mrs Hagenstall of Tom Bean. another sister resides in Garland.

Tigers Ready for Friday Scrimmage and Pigskin Barbecue

Tiger fans prepare for a big Friday night featuring a scrimmage with the Sherman Bearcats B team and the annual Pigskin Club barbecue from 6 to 8 pm. Advance tickets cost 1.90 adults and 1.00 children, gate prices rise to 1.75 and 1.25. Ernie's of Greenville will provide the barbecue before the Tigers meet Sherman in the second scrimmage of the season.

United Fund drive opens Monday in Whitewright

Whitewright residents are urged to prepare for the 1969 United Fund Drive starting Monday September 8 with a goal of 2260. Drive officials Don Williams and Larry Presley announce a pancake supper and a budget supporting local World War II era groups and services including Boys Baseball Boy Scouts Salvation Army and Red Cross among others.
