The Whitewright United Fund officially starts with a pancake supper at Fireman's Hall at 7 pm delaying the planned Sept. 8 start. Local organizers promote the drive and invite community support.

Mrs. Nettie Magers Doyle, a granddaughter of John and Mary Marshall, visited Whitewright with her daughter Ida Mae Russell. The 80 year old drummer and pianist toured missions in California Arizona New Mexico and Texas with evangelist teams and the A. A. Allen Tent Meeting.

Whitewright residents are asked to help the Texas Junior Chamber of Commerce in a letter campaign defending the Apollo 8 Bible reading broadcast. Signatures are collected at the Sun office with a statewide goal of 300000 letters.

August County Jail Report Shows Large Minor Alcohol Violations

Sheriff Woody Blanton reports 275 minors jailed for possessing alcohol, 46 percent of August county jail inmates. The month lists major arrests for driving while intoxicated 37, drunkenness 34, disturbance 16, lunacy 13, assault 12, and other offenses. 132 warrants processed including 60 for district court and 39 for foreign courts. Fines and fees totaled 9047 dollars. property recovered valued at 5294 dollars with 13182 dollars reported stolen. Sheriff’s office cleared 10 burglaries, six thefts, and logged 215 investigative calls in August.

Draft call for Texas lowers as quotas spread

The Oct. draft call for Texas is 1,461, down from 1,698 in September. Col Morris S Schwartz says the state share of a 29,000 national quota is split between the Army and Marine Corps, with 27,600 for the Army and 1,400 for the Marines.

Grayson County approves 1969 tax rates and jobs at meeting

The Grayson County Commissioners Court approves the 1969 tax rate per 100 dollars of assessed value for five funds with prorations for county general, jury, road and bridge, road bond series 1957, road bond series 1959, and courthouse bonds 1961. A special school tax is levied per district to support the State School Fund. An extensive telephone system is authorized for the County Attorney’s office. J C Braden Precinct 4 is allowed 5 to pay an appraiser for FM 996 right of way. Ann Sonner resigns as Home Demonstration Agent effective Sept 15. Sheriff Blanton authorized to send deputies to Austin and to Grayson County College at county expense.
