Virginian who built cotton empire closes New Orleans hits

Slim Tom Jordan, who came to the New Orleans Cotton Exchange in 1941 with $300 borrowed capital and turned it into a million in a year, liquidated his holdings causing the New Orleans and New York cotton exchanges to close. The move sent cotton futures down 6 cents to 33 cents a pound, costing growers an estimated $200 million in three days. Jordan offered no comment. Exchange members said his action forced the closures. A spot firm already held hedges in the market.

Cotton Hedge Drives Futures Drop After Spot Buying

The spot firm bought in hedges to cover future sales, matching its short contracts against Jordan's long positions. Jordan ended up 175,000 to 190,000 bales long on a breaking market, according to cotton experts. The dumping led to a sharp futures decline.
