The Halloween Carnival at the High School tonight is set to attract a large audience if weather cooperates. Sponsored by high and grammar school students, the event runs 6 to 9 p.m. with hog prize, queen crowning, booths, and gym concessions to fund school activities.
NEW YORK The United States accepted Russia s proposal for world disarmament but will cooperate only if inspections prevent violations and if Soviet forces are accounted for at home and abroad. Warren Austin urged disarmament at the United Nations while warning against unilateral disarmament.
New York United Nations Atom Commission delegate Bernard M Baruch warned it would be suicide for the United States to stop manufacturing the atom bomb unless other nations pledged similar restraint. He urged creation of an international atomic agency to curb war use and said surrender without global agreement would be death by own action.
Roy Clement reports 34 cows moaning after calves were hauled to the open market. Cattle belong to Jack Armstrong and Henry Pickering of Biardstown. Hogs voice disapproval, likening the moment to the Wallace era and questioning price controls under President Truman.
Washington announces Households may use canning sugar stamps for 30 more days. Spare stamps No 9 and 10 remain valid through November 30, each for five pounds. Washington Civilian Production Chief John D. Small urged the nation to resist talk of a recession. He said an industrial decline is not inevitable if labor and management use restraint and common sense. He argued negative forecasts create fears that lead to cutbacks and actual downturns.
CHICAGO Housewives beset by sugar rationing welcomed news of a new compound 4000 times as sweet as cane sugar. Pieter Eduard Verkade of Delft Technical University told the American Chemical Society the substance is by far the sweetest known to man. It can be obtained pure, is harmless to health, and stable in boiling water and non acidic media. It is being manufactured now in Holland.
The VA requires all Texas firms using the G I Bill to submit by January 1 a comprehensive outline of how they train 1,400 North Texas veterans for more responsible jobs. The move tightens the program and aims to exclude firms not meeting standards under the new law.
