Whitewright board meeting sees walkout over perceived inequities

Four Negro citizens left the Whitewright school board meeting after being denied a group speech time. Kenneth Owens pressed concerns about notifying parents when students are suspended and about Negro teacher representation. Board members noted two Negro elementary teachers and discussed pay, discipline, district athletic alignment, and a stronger disciplinary code. An elementary principal considered resigning to teach full time, and tiger football game receipts averaged about 400 dollars per game.

Youth to Collect Labels for UNICEF Halloween Drive

Youth groups FHA Campfire Girls Cub Scouts and Methodist Youth will seek labels and cash this Halloween to fund UNICEF. Collectable labels come from Koolaid Welch jam Clark gum Peter Paul Birds Eye Hunt's Pals boxes. Coordinators say the drive boosted by companies donating funds. UNICEF can vaccinate a child with two Koolaid packages.

Playing a game dedicated to William Patterson the Tigers Junior Varsity notched their sixth straight victory. Coach Richard Capps praised defense and blocking while Gary Wortham Billy Jester Phillip Smith and Ronald Turner led offensively. Next week they face Honey Grove at 8 p.m. in Honey Grove Stadium.

Annual Spook-time Carnival Has Jail Dunk Booth Prizes

The Whitewright PTA sponsors a Saturday night carnival on the football field with booths run by room mothers. Activities start at 5 p.m. and include dart and throw games, fortune telling, cake and pie walks, a dunking booth, jail and spook house, bumper cars, spin-a-prize, string pulls, grab bags, duck ponds and food booths. Drawings offer a teddy bear, radios, groceries, and a 12 gauge shotgun. Proceeds fund new restrooms for the elementary school.

Doss Explains Whitewright Ordinances Adopted

The Whitewright City Council met in a brief session to hear city attorney Bob Doss explain new ordinances on trash collection and dog control. The measures were adopted and will be published in the Whitewright Sun. Mayor Sonny Smith named Hermon Philley and Vince Freeman to form a city planning committee. names will be presented in November. The council tabled a police uniform purchase proposal from Police Chief Jerry Pierce.

Light Tigers Overwhelm Whitesboro In Homecoming Victory

Whitewright raced to a 19 6 win at Tiger Stadium holding Whitesboro to limited drives. Tigers totaled 362 yards, 232 rushing and 136 passing, with key plays from Steve Fortner and Philip Huffman on defense and offense. Ground attack by Blanton Atterberry Huffman Daniels Hicks carried the load while Jimmy Spann completed six of fourteen passes.

Regina Bartley Elected Chapter Sweetheart at Whitewright FFA

Regina Bartley daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Bartley was elected Chapter Sweetheart of the Whitewright FFA Chapter. Regina is in the junior class and has been active in drill team basketball volleyball class officer and cheerleader. She will attend district events and livestock shows as Chapter Sweetheart. Undefeated Arterberry scored two TDs on a 136 yards with a 41 yard completion from Spann and a tipped pass TD from Whitesboro. Whitesboro rallied with Teague and Daniles TD drive, then Honey Grove visits Friday to defend 14 A title.

Lions Club sells Halloween candy for Whitewright drive

Lions members plan a Monday night canvass in Whitewright to raise funds for civic projects. From 6 30 to 8 p m they will sell bags at 1.00 each containing 160 assorted pieces to meet the Halloween rush, says Lions president Don Williams.

Beauty Pageant Rehearsals Planned in Whitewright

Whitewright Chamber president Tom Brookshear announced rehearsals for the Little Miss Whitewright Contest on October 25 and 27 at Whitewright High School with a dress rehearsal for Miss Whitewright and Little Miss on October 28 after the pep rally. Eleven Miss Whitewright candidates are listed with sponsors.
