Continental Telephone reorganizes its Southwest division with Whitewright joining the Central district and reporting to Fairfield. Anne Logan, new district service manager, transfers to Emory as customer service manager. Joe Norwood moves to Dallas, Leon Scott remains service center supervisor, and other supervisory shifts occur. All job changes are effective immediately with relocations possibly through year start.

Cemeteries Fund Nears Three Thousand in Whitewright

Whitewright's Cemeteries Improvement and Beautification fund surpassed 3000 in gifts from 41 new donors this week. Dr. Ed Grant of Baton Rouge gave 100 in memory of local natives buried at Oak Hill, part of a drive to improve Oak Hill and City cemeteries for the Centennial year.

Whitewright Reaches 45 Percent of United Fund Goal

Whitewright leads United Way drive at Sherman restaurant with 45 percent of a 4756 goal after three weeks and 2141 raised. Volunteers 38 strong, money from door to door and small businesses mainly benefiting Boy Scouts Camp Fire Girls Cub Scouts Red Cross and local services. County totals from last week include Denison 22 percent Sherman 19 percent and other areas. A county victory dinner is set for November 1 at the Silver Wings club on Grayson County College west campus.

Grant Approved For Whitewright Schools

Whitewright Independent School District receives a $30,000 Emergency School Aid Act grant arranged by Health Education Welfare to fund a high school reading program for below grade level students and a counseling and guidance program. A project director counselor will foster interracial contact and minority involvement in school activities, with a reading teacher and aide to be hired once qualified personnel are found. A called school board meeting Tuesday night reviewed the plan.

Chamber Sets Yule Parade In Whitewright

Whitewright Chamber of Commerce met Monday at the 200 Club and scheduled the annual Christmas parade for December 3 at 2 p.m. Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place floats. Butch Morgan was named chairman of the Christmas drawings. Merchants drawings will be held each Saturday in December at 4 p.m. Christmas Eve drawing at 2 p.m. Chuck Wilson reported on the light project. Milton Simpson presided. Two guests attended Billy Drake of Lewisville and Charles Melvin of Community Public Service Company.

Tigers Dominate Honey Grove in 38-6 Victory on Friday

Whitewright Tigers raced to a 38-6 win over Honey Grove Warriors tying Cooper for the district lead in 16-A. Starters Stan Smith and Lonnie McCartney piled up 226 rushing yards, while Gary Tillett passed 132, Jeff Daniels and Reid Pittman combined for 68 and 46 receiving yards. Tigers’ defense held Honey Grove to 30 yards rushing and 9 passing, with two interceptions by Jeff Stader and a safety by Mike McCollum. Whitewright heads into a bye week before hosting Fannindel, as Honey Grove drops to 0-5 and travels to Fannindel.

Rotary club honors Grandfather Prexy Philley with cane

Grandfather Prexy J Hermon Philley was named president of the Rotary Grandfather's Club and received a wooden cane from outgoing president Clint Hennig. Philley keeps the cane until another grandchild arrives for a local Rotary member. The event honors the birth of grandson Jonathan Wade Philley on Sept 21 at Saint Davis Hospital in Austin. Jonathan is son of Hermon Wade Philley and his wife, weighing 10 pounds 12 ounces and measuring 23 inches. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Philley of Whitewright and Mr and Mrs William Jowhansen of Phoenix. The baby was born on Philley's 42nd wedding anniversary, missing Mrs Philley's birthday by 3 hours 9 minutes. The Philleys also have a granddaughter, Kristy McClure of Arlington.
