Louise Elizabeth Crosno aged 13 months, daughter of Mr and Mrs C M Crosno of Lone Oak, Texas, died in Greenville after choking on a large bean. Playing on the floor, she found and placed the bean in her mouth, which became lodged in the windpipe and lung. She was rushed to a sanitarium but died.
Spectators totaled 509 000 at 14 major college games on Saturday. Michigan vs Ohio State drew 68 000 in Columbus, with 58 000 at Yale vs Princeton in the East. A separate report recounts two men in a Maxwell car held up a car near Bells, but were released after clarification that they were returning home to Plano from Denison.
Efforts to identify the man found dead near the Katy tracks last Friday have failed. The youthfully aged body, about 23 to 25 years old, was found in a culvert south of town and remains unidentified at a Sherman undertaker's room pending official handling.
The Texas State Health Department received warning from the U S Public Service Surgeon General about a pneumonic plague outbreak in California where 25 of 29 infected have died. Health Officer Duggan says the disease spreads from person to person and fleas on rats and squirrels transmit it. He urges rat extermination by protecting food and making rat-proofed housing to prevent breeding. There is little danger of a Texas outbreak.
Fort Worth officials report the theft of $12,000 from a private bank vault. The money belonged to the Piggly Wiggly stores and was left in the vault Saturday night. Police have no clues as detectives investigate the break in and missing combination.
A man found by railroad tracks with a deep head wound and no identifying items may have died from a train accident or foul play. Clothing lacked personal effects. a hickory nut and shoe strings were all recovered. Sheriff Everheart broadcast descriptions to Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas papers, but no match was found. Dr. R L Sears treated Mrs. Walter Keeling, who is recovering.
El Paso reports the forty fourth annual American Federation of Labor session opens with a caution against rapid formation of labor banks. The federation notes 23 labor banks are in operation and president Gompers calls for adherence to voluntary action across economic and political fields. Governor elect Miriam A Ferguson of Texas sends greetings urging protection for women and children in industry.
Austin reports Texas has 1,321,600 school children a gain of 17,000 from last year. Most growth is in city districts while older oil counties show losses. State school funds are apportioned by the census.
Charles Julian Boone and Marguerite Montgomery married at the bride’s parents home after a 4 PM ceremony led by Rev J F Fender. The wedding party included Estelle Montgomery and Cameron Boone, with Clara Montgomery and Will Boone as attendants. The couple, both Grayson College alumni, will reside in Memphis Texas after a brief El Paso honeymoon.
The Rangers travel to Bonham Friday afternoon to face the Bonham high school football team. They expect a hard fight but aim to win. The Rangers have only one defeat this season.
Houston reports 174 men whipped since January in Texas penitentiaries and on farms, amid abolition of the dark cell and the end of the four inch horse. Whippings require a written order and physician supervision. A movement seeks abolition of all corporal punishment in prisons.
