Check Writing in Texas Grows Without Aid
Texas accumulates over 3 million checks per year with more than 154 million dollars issued in state payments. The Comptroller reports 250000 monthly checks for old age assistance and unemployment, issued by a machine-driven process staffed by special workers. Despite no state money of its own, the system relies on tax funds and a legislative machine of 181 members to decide amounts and sources.
