The merchants of Whitewright hosted a free picture show at the Palace Theatre last Saturday drawing several hundred women and children and some men. It ran from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. A similar free show is planned for next Saturday with a program aimed especially at women and children.
Texarkana Court of Civil Appeals may decide if a mail carrier is a federal agent not required to pay state license tax on vehicles. First Assistant Attorney General D A Simmons will travel to argue for the state in the suit brought by Dan M Moody to collect fees from A C Louwein Houston mailman. Louwein won district court judgment.
Fred W. Smith chaired the program with Britt W. Crain, high school principal, providing a reading and solo. The quartet featured a timid Sunday school superintendent and a song titled the state song of Arkansas. Rev J H Hawkins traveled from Arkansas to Texas for the event. Governor Stilwell of Texarkana is expected at next Friday’s 7 pm meeting with other prominent Rotarians.
The Garland high school football team defeated Bonham 54 to 0 after a pregame stop in Whitewright. The victory boosts Garland in the Class B district race where only Garland Highland Park and Farmersville remain, with a rematch against Highland Park anticipated.
The Home Economics Club met Wednesday at 4 p m in the high school auditorium. The program included a song reading by Velma Bennett a talk by Mardelle Pumphrey a duet by Martha Jo Sears and Una Lee Hampton with Nelia Margaret Hill on piano. Afterward members visited the sewing room and were served by third year girls. Next meeting set for Nov 29.
Sherman officials host M B Gilson of the federal biological service to outline a county wide rat extermination campaign costing no more than 1.50 per family. The plan calls for start on November 21 with chairmen and trustees urged to attend a Thursday meeting to organize community by community efforts.
Texas ships more than 7 million pounds of dressed poultry to New York each year and over 2 million pounds to Chicago, reflecting sizable regional demand and state output in poultry.
Sherman reports that Grayson County collected $81 770.44 in highway taxes to November 1 from automobile and truck licenses gas oil and weight taxes and other levies. Of this sum $31 388.81 is allocated under the law to Grayson Collections. the new motor vehicle gasoline and weight tax law takes effect January 1 1926.
G. W. Kingry of Childress has purchased the Kidd Cafe in the Ray building on Grand Avenue. The cafe has been closed since Monday as carpenters and painters remodel fixtures. He aims to reopen Saturday with new furnishings and an inviting atmosphere.
Charles A Lindbergh returns to Washington to receive the Hubbard medal from President Coolidge in a prestigious ceremony at the Washington auditorium. A large, prominent audience includes government and diplomatic leaders as Lindbergh is celebrated for his transoceanic flight and pioneering aviation feats.
Police pursue five Gypsies including two women linked to Saturday theft of 409 dollars from Hebron State Bank in Denton County. A touring car traced to Fort Worth aided the inquiry as a Gypsy woman allegedly distracted the cashier while accomplices stole from the cash drawer.
In Dallas at 1615 Second avenue two sleeping Adams family members were bitten by a large rat. The creature attacked Mr. Adams Friday night and again Sunday night after eluding a twelve-pound dead fall trap that dragged the weight across the floor.
A revival at Central Christian Church began Wednesday evening and attracts large congregations. Rev. J. T. Purvis preaches engaging sermons while Miss Gladys Ray leads the unusually good song services. Services start nightly at 7 15. Subjects for the remainder of the week are listed on another page.
The Kantagree Bridge Club met Miss Ethel Gordon on Wednesday evening in a rose decorated living room. Players started after 7 30 with tallies drawn and a salad course served. Guests included Ollie McMillin Mary Lou Ross Inez Ray Lucille Harris and Mrs. Mary Ryan. High score went to Sue McConnell. Lena Mae Gowdy will host the next meeting.
The Sun announces new names on its honor roll as coverage expands in Whitewright. A subscription drive offers the Sun with the Semi-Weekly Farm News at 1.85 for one year three papers weekly, aiming for broader home delivery. Names added include W. T. Kirby Tom Lilley Rev J. T. Purvis Mrs J. L. German George Brannon J. H. Alexander and many others.
Senator Morris Sheppard of Texas urged President Coolidge to appoint Clarence Gilmore, chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission, to the Interstate Commerce Commission when a vacancy arises. Indorsements also on file from Senators Mayfield and Pine. Mayfield’s bid for the seat is denied as he supports Gilmore for the appointment.

Governor Moody announces asphalt surfacing costs under current Highway Commission contracts are far lower than 1925 and 1926 payments to the American Road Company and the Hoffman Construction Company. He cites 1926 cheapest prices in Delta and Henderson Counties and 1927 figures across Hunt Reeves Jeff Davis Cooke Hall Dickens Ward Rusk Upshur, averaging 18.55 cents per square yard.
W R Wilson of Slaton Texas sends in a check for another year of The Sun noting long readership since the Plow and Hammer era. He reports cotton ginned to date about 2500 bales with 8000 more expected as crops run late but good.
Tulsa reports the No 20 Yates well in the Yates pool Pecos County Texas flowed 65 880 barrels daily. Developed by Trans continental Oil and Mid-Kansas Oil and Gas the well near the discovery site surpassed earlier Texas and U.S. wells though trailing Cerro Azul and Lake View gusher in scale. Observers note the shallow pay sands could yield up to 1 000 000 barrels daily.
The Parent Teacher Association will meet next Tuesday at 4 PM in the grammar school auditorium. The program includes Invocation by Rev. J. W. Willbanks, Health Play by the Fourth Grade, a Piano Solo by Laura Jean Fleming, Convention Report by Mrs. Lucian Andrews, Reading by James Lay, and a Piano Solo by Anita Vestal.
A union Thanksgiving service is planned for next Thursday Thanksgiving Day in Whitewright. Held at the Church of Christ, Rev. J. R. Waldrum will lead, with congregational singing and choir numbers from city churches. Rev. J. T. Purvis will deliver the sermon at 10 o clock.
Fort Worth report says 500 cars carrying 10 million pounds of Thanksgiving turkey left Texas in two weeks for the North East and West. J. B. Collier of Fort Worth Poultry and Egg Co and Texas Poultry and Egg Association reports Texas farmers earned over 3.5 million dollars. Despite the surge, 60 to 70 percent of the crop remains for Christmas and New Year markets.
Gene Cameron a comedian with Fox Film Studios of Hollywood was killed in a car overturn near Yuma Arizona. His two cousins Miss Peggy Baldwin and Miss Sue Langford were injured with Langford suffering a broken back and Baldwin bruises and possible internal injuries. The women were brought to Yuma County hospital. Cameron will be buried in Dallas.
Mr and Mrs Lucian LaRo e and Mrs H F Young of Sherman and Mrs John P Haden of Durant Okla left Wednesday for San Marcos to visit Mr and Mrs R B Mack. They will also visit Miss Lucile LaRoe a student at the University of Texas at Austin.
