Mayor Sonny Smith proclaims Friday November 12 in Whitewright as Tigers night in Van Alstyne thrilling district clash. The Tigers chase the Panthers in a final hurdle to the district championship amid a strong season and hometown support.
Whitewright and Wolfe City fought to a 14 14 tie after two blocked punts in the second quarter. Van Alstyne toppled Honey Grove 26 7 as Panthers capitalized on four fumbles and three interceptions. Whitewright faces Van Alstyne Friday for the district title with a 7 30 kickoff, while Arterberry ran for 66 and 72 yard TDs and Spann connected on a two point pass.
Miss Barbara Martin of the Texas State Library Office told city officials the Whitewright library cannot rely on private help or city aid to qualify for federal funds. A new plan would tie loan limits to tax support and budget, with grants possible only if ample operating funds, volumes, staff, and hours are met. She urged adding a library phone, one evening weekly, and seeking county support. currently Whitewright lacks tax support and volunteers run 5,000 volumes with 12 hours weekly.

Ex-convict and former heroin user Bobby Mankin, now an evangelist and 33, will lead a revival at First Baptist Church of Whitewright from November 27 to December 5 with nightly 7:30 pm services and a November 30 10:25 am high school assembly. Music by Bob Elmore.
Whitewright JV knocked Wolfe City for two touchdowns in a 14-8 win Thursday night. Terry Clark directed an 80-yard drive ending in Arty Kimbell’s 15-yard TD run. Terry Thomas recovered a Wolfe fumble at the 35, setting up Ronnie Forner’s 32-yard scoring run. Wolfe City answered with a 75-yard drive and a TD in the second quarter.
Dick Capps will coach the varsity basketball team for the 1971-72 season while Scotty Conley handles the boys B team and the girls squad. Girls tryouts are underway with an intersquad scrimmage planned to trim the roster. The girls open at home on Nov 16 at S and S, and the boys visit Anna on Nov 23 at Tiger Gym.
The city council approves purchase of a Hobbs side loading trash packer with the dump bed from Hobbs Trailer Co for 3687.60 and a truck body from Edwards Chevrolet for about 3500. City Secretary Helen Billner says the truck will start operation Monday. After Monday dog catchers Ballard and Wright will collect dogs on unvaccinated or unlicensed complaints.
Mrs. Betty Burleson reported the best ever UNICEF drive sponsored by the First United Methodist Church last week. Workers gathered contributions over 112 dollars, the largest amount received from this annual effort. She and pastor Rev. Bill Grisham thanked workers and all contributors for the worthwhile endeavor.
