Veterans Day, successor to Armistice Day, honors all service members in wars and actions. No local observances beyond post office and First National Bank holiday.
Mechanical trouble with the State Health Department mobile x ray unit reduced participation in the mass chest x ray event. Although the machine was fixed on Wednesday, only 850 people were x rayed by the close, with hundreds left waiting Tuesday and Wednesday. The Chamber of Commerce held a drawing after the unit shut down. prizes went to Dale Taylor, Mrs. John Biggerstaff, Mrs. W. D. Taylor, Raymond L. Price, F. A. Smith, Gene McKnight and F. M. Echols who won the blanket.
Leslie T Holland of Dallas is named Federal Civil Defense Officer and will coordinate civil defense for all federal agencies across Arkansas Louisiana New Mexico Oklahoma and Texas. A Whitewright native and North Texas State College alumnus, he joins after 14 years in government service and three years with the General Services Administration in Dallas. He is married to Mary Helen Kaplan of Denton with two daughters Nancy and Mary Elizabeth.

George B. Pierce 64 died at McKinney veterans hospital at 3 30 p m after a long illness. Funeral services set for 2 30 p m Friday at Barnheart Chapel with interment at Bethel Cemetery. He leaves a step son Sgt J C Brantley stationed in Germany, three sisters Mrs Floyd Harris Whitewright Mrs H R Williams Dallas and Mrs Johnnie Brown Sherman, two brothers Jones R Pierce O Donnell and R E Pierce Whitewright.

Funeral services for 90 year old Miss Sue Thompson were held at Earnheart Chapel with Rev. Newton V. Cole presiding. She died Friday noon at Mullican Rest Home Savoy after hip fracture. Burial followed in West Hill Cemetery Sherman with pallbearers named Arthur Badgett G O Neal Riley Tabor Dutch Neal Clyde Brown Pascal Connelly.
Mrs Fannie Golden 92 died Monday at a Savoy rest home. Funeral services were at 2 p m Tuesday at Barnheart Chapel conducted by Rev Newton Cole. Burial in Wylie cemetery. Born Nobility May 14 1862 to Martin and Sarah Gentry. Survived by son B H Pickett Dallas and brother R F Gentry Desert with two grandchildren.

Texas Attorney General John Ben Shepperd announced that women may serve on juries after November 19, the date the general election vote is certified. He cautioned counties to prepare separate facilities for male and female jurors, noting no further legislative action is required.
Port Arthur employees in five interstate firms voted 63 to 0 against Sabine Local Industrial Union No. 1814 CIU in an NLRB election. The union strike, begun Nov 19 1953, had tied up more than 20 local stores. George W. Cowart said the result means nothing and picketing will continue.
Blind street musician George Williams testified to a judge that he spends about two hours daily playing guitar and singing hillbilly songs in Chicago. He earns roughly 20 to 25 dollars per hour in tips, but the judge warned that begging is illegal and placed him on probation until December 2.
