Heartworm in Dogs An Expanding Risk To Pets

Heartworm is a parasitic disease affecting dogs and spreading inland due to increased pet mobility. Transmitted by mosquitoes, it damages the heart and lungs, can lead to congestive failure, and is preventable by mosquito control and daily preventive drugs started before mosquito season. Diagnosis uses a blood test and microscope, treatment is injectables plus anti inflammatories, and prognosis improves with early detection. The disease is rare in cats and poses no human risk.
