Dick Walker 55 longtime Whitewright mayor and community leader died Friday morning Oct 28 1977 after a cancer battle. Services were held Saturday at First United Methodist Church with Rev Dan Weir officiating. Burial at Oak Hill Cemetery burial directed by Earnheart Funeral Home pallbearers included John Hynds Carl Rowland Dr Steve Sullivan W E Chuck Wilson David L Johnson and S T Montgomery.

Whitewright surpasses goal with late campaign boost
United Fund exceeds its 4756 dollar goal after noon on Tuesday with a small final excess of 2.60 dollars. Grayson County pledges total 421238 dollars this year for United Way sponsored groups across 32 agencies. The Whitewright City Council elected Dr Stephen Sullivan local dentist as mayor to replace the late Dick Walker. Cemeteries Fund Passes $6500 in Whitewright
Whitewright’s Cemeteries Improvement fund recently topped $6,500 with gifts this week ranging from 8 to 250. Total gifts reported by Mrs. Emory Christian stood at $6,570 as of Tuesday noon for beautification at Oak Hill and City cemeteries. Funds will support Oak Hill fencing to deter vandalism, with some money directed by donors to specific cemeteries.

Dick Walker, longtime Whitewright mayor and community figure, died of cancer at 55 on October 28 1977. Born November 18 1921 in Van Alstyne he moved to Whitewright in 1949 to start a pharmaceutical career. He banked on a federal grant to fund a new civic center with an auditorium and left a legacy of civic service and friendship across the town.
