Services Held for Mayor Walker in Whitewright

Dick Walker 55 longtime Whitewright mayor and community leader died Friday morning Oct 28 1977 after a cancer battle. Services were held Saturday at First United Methodist Church with Rev Dan Weir officiating. Burial at Oak Hill Cemetery burial directed by Earnheart Funeral Home pallbearers included John Hynds Carl Rowland Dr Steve Sullivan W E Chuck Wilson David L Johnson and S T Montgomery.

Whitewright surpasses goal with late campaign boost

United Fund exceeds its 4756 dollar goal after noon on Tuesday with a small final excess of 2.60 dollars. Grayson County pledges total 421238 dollars this year for United Way sponsored groups across 32 agencies. Whitewright led area in percentage gains for four weeks as Peggy Partridge of First National Bank received the outstanding worker award for the 1977 drive.

Whitewright council names Dr Stephen Sullivan mayor

The Whitewright City Council elected Dr Stephen Sullivan local dentist as mayor to replace the late Dick Walker. Sullivan resigned from the council to take the mayoral post with a new council member to be appointed later. The body approved annexation talks for land west of Whitewright and funded additional work on the new City Hall.

Cooper Beats Whitewright In District Title Showdown

Cooper halfback J C Morris and fullback Denny Hagen powered 291 yards as the Bulldogs defeated Whitewright 22 to 13 in a key District 16 A game. Whitewright’s Gary Tillett threw 14 of 32 for 151 yards while Stan Smith rushed for 119. Wolfe City defeated Honey Stoves 36-14 and Bells rolled to a 52-0 win over Leonard.

Cemeteries Fund Passes $6500 in Whitewright

Whitewright’s Cemeteries Improvement fund recently topped $6,500 with gifts this week ranging from 8 to 250. Total gifts reported by Mrs. Emory Christian stood at $6,570 as of Tuesday noon for beautification at Oak Hill and City cemeteries. Funds will support Oak Hill fencing to deter vandalism, with some money directed by donors to specific cemeteries.

Dick Walker Memorial Fund Established in Whitewright

The Dick Walker Memorial Fund is established to honor the late Mayor Dick Walker. Gifts will furnish the new civic center, currently about one third completed, with trustee Chuck Wilson of First National Bank Whitewright. Local funds are needed despite federal construction grants. Mail or deliver gifts to the bank for deposit.

Community roundup in Whitewright highlights charity and scouts

Whitewright residents attended varied activities to aid local groups. First United Methodist Church collected 93 dollars for UNICEF during a trick or treat event, and a sandwich supper followed. PTO carnival on Oct 29 raised over 2000 dollars for classes and a middle school project. Dr. Paul Geers received a letter blanket from the Tiger football team for medical help. Gene Shaw led a United Way drive, with Whitewright reaching and slightly exceeding its goal. Cub Scout dens distributed Goodwill sacks for clothing donations. Local Boy Scouts joined in nationwide Goodwill collection efforts. Rain totals: John Curtis reports 0.3 inch on November 1, October total 0.1, September 2.2, August 5.3 inches.

Whitewright Mourns Dick Walker A Civic Leader

Dick Walker, longtime Whitewright mayor and community figure, died of cancer at 55 on October 28 1977. Born November 18 1921 in Van Alstyne he moved to Whitewright in 1949 to start a pharmaceutical career. He banked on a federal grant to fund a new civic center with an auditorium and left a legacy of civic service and friendship across the town.
