Four Die As Deadman Creek Floods Near Abilene

In Abilene Texas on Sunday a sudden rise in Deadman Creek at Hambly crossing drowned four people including Esther Lockett 15 Basil Lockett 6 Ruth Locket 4 and Miss Willie Rogers 18 a Simmons College student. Dr. B L Lockett and Mrs Lockett survived after clinging to a tree as the car washed away.

Post Office at Kentuckytown Discontinued May 31

The Post Office Department ordered the discontinuance of the Kentuckytown post office on May 31. Mail to patrons will be handled through Whitewright on route No 5. Kentuckytown is an early North Texas settlement. Also, Miss Pina Murphy, injured in a May 19 automobile crash near Cumby, has been moved home with improving condition and is expected to recover.

Bryant Delegate National Convention from Texas

C B Bryant of this place was elected as a delegate from Texas to the National Republican Convention to be held in Cleveland Ohio in June. He will represent the fourth Texas district with Dorchester of Sherman as alternate. Delegates were instructed to vote as a unit for Coolidge and strong resolutions praised State Chairman Creager. Whitewright attendees from Grayson County included W H King and Postmaster W O Brents.

Funeral for Mrs Chumbley Held at Oak Hill

Mrs Mahala Ann Chumbley aged 63 died at 9 15 Sunday night at J H Biggerstaff farm west of the city after a short illness from acute indigestion. Survived by husband John P Chumbley and three children George Bob and Miss Ethel. Funeral and interment were at Oak Hill Cemetery Monday afternoon conducted by Rev J A Dickey Church of Christ. She had lived near Whitewright thirty five years and was well known as a good neighbor and Christian mother.

Convention Delegates to Be Honorable for Women

New York May 28 delegates and alternates to the Democratic National convention will all be titled Honorable. Women delegates now receive the same courtesy as men, avoiding Mrs or Miss distinctions. The headquarters issued a letter addressed to Dear Fellow Democrat to prevent misaddressing.

Memorial Service at Methodist Church Sunday

A Memorial Day service will be held Sunday at 3 o clock in the Methodist Church. Dr J F Fender will lead prayer, a male quartet will perform, Miss Lucile LaRoe reads The Unknown Soldier, G C Brewer will give the memorial address, and The Star Spangled Banner will close. Afterward American Legion members will decorate graves at Oak Hill and City Cemetery, meeting at Legion Hall at 2 30 Sunday.

Ferguson to Speak in Sherman on Thursday Night

Ex Governor James E. Ferguson of Temple will address voters in Sherman and Grayson County at 8 p.m. Thursday at the courthouse. On a North Texas tour he discusses persons and issues in Texas business affairs and also plans to speak on the Ku Klux Kingdom.

Postmasters Favor Changes in Service in Texas

The twenty first annual Texas branch National League of District Postmasters convention in Dallas adopted resolutions backing elimination of post card prepayment for C O D and return receipts, ending double postage for misaddressed letters, and supporting House bills to regulate third and fourth class offices and hire extra clerks. Officers and delegates for the national convention were elected as the sessions closed in the Oriental Hotel.

Poison Death of 16 Year Old in Texas Field

Marvin Kurkendall aged about 16 died at his home near Blue Ridge Texas on Saturday from poison he had eaten with dewberries. The berries were said to have been sprayed to kill grasshoppers.

Dyer Purchases Higginbotham Drug Store in Sherman

J L Dyer of Sherman has acquired the Higgin botham drug store on the east side of the square. The store is among Sherman’s oldest druggists, with Dyer already owning seven other pharmacies in Trenton Celeste Celina McKinney Farmersville Garland and Sherman. R M Noe will stay on as prescriptionist, and Alton May the recent high school graduate may join as a permanent employee.

Ford Announces New Dallas Plant To Cost Over Million

Dallas May 28 Construction of a new Ford assembly plant begun yesterday will cost more than 1 000 000 dollars and run a daily capacity of 350 automobiles and trucks. The facility will double the present plant output, sits on 22 acres in East Dallas, and is to be completed by December 15 implementing the latest factory planning.

Pure-Bred Swine Campaigners Visit Whitewright

The Pure-Bred lire campaigners toured Grayson County this Thursday forenoon, promoting elimination of scrub stock and replacement by pure bred stock. Notables from Grayson County accompanied the exhibit, plus a crowd that heard lectures. Dinner was served at Pierce's Cafe, and the Parent-Teacher Association will host a Friday night event at the grammar school with a 15 cent child and 25 cent adult admission. The cantata A Dream of Fairyland, directed by Mrs. Lucian Andrews, promises an entertaining program.

Three young men were arrested near Blue Ridge and charged with robbing and setting fire to a Blue Ridge business house Saturday night. The fire consumed the three remaining wooden buildings on the north side of the square.
