The Whitewright Hatchery shut down for the season, not to reopen until fall. Manager R. D. Ford reports 35,708 chicks hatched for trade, excluding culls. If 20,000 sold as fryers at market price, they'd bring over $12,000, leaving more than 15,000 for home use.
Rev. A. E. Major recounts daughter Laura Lynne Major's perilous journey from Luchowfu to Shanghai amid Cantonese troops and anti foreign unrest. They crossed by foot and sail boats, aided by a passport and local help, then boarded a gunboat and freighter to Shanghai. Looting of mission property and her note on leaving the work underscore dire conditions.
In Wichita Falls on May 25 R E James organizer for the American Federation of Labor urged a six hour day and five day week as a near term goal. He said machinery increases require shorter hours to preserve work for Americans and condemned convict labor as unfair to free workers. A market note from M C Spivy & Co Bonham reports a new wave of hundreds of lots of goods today.
The Federal Radio Commission issues official orders changing broadcasting wave lengths effective 3 AM June 1. Fort Worth Dallas stations alter frequencies: WBAP 476 to 500, WFAA 476 to 500, WRR 246 to 352, KRLD 352 to 222, KFQB 508 to 260, KFJZ 254 to 250. WBAP and WFAA gain near exclusive national air channels.
New York May 25. Bashful Slim Lindbergh feared anonymity in Paris. Col Theodore Roosevelt recounted how the youth asked for letters to friends willing to show him around. Roosevelt provided six letters including one to Ambassador Herrick, noting the flier cared only for the feat, not social glory or success.
Rotary Club of Rham Pennington led a program with S H Montgomery detailing insurance industry shifts toward state standard policies and equal rates, D E Low praising railroads for universal service and equal treatment, while the third speaker delivered a sharp piece whose quotation could not be printed due to space.
J W Wilson has accepted a position with the Southern Plow Company as traveling salesman in this district. He previously worked in hardware and implement business in Whitewright for several years and will keep his home here.
Richard Moser 18 died after an appendicitis operation while fearing the welfare of his five younger siblings. Doctors labeled death as caused by sudden heart dilation from extreme mental suffering and fear of dying. His father died last year and his mother died at his birth. he had supported the family since.
Willie Blair 15 son of Mr and Mrs N J Blair Maypearl was crushed while cranking a car in gear. Both legs broken below the knees in the accident occurred in Italy Ellis County on May 25.
Norfolk reports a successful Wright brothers flying machine trial near Kittyhawk. The device flew three miles into an 21 mph wind and landed at a chosen spot, powered by a small engine driving propellers with no balloon attachment. Lindbergh was not two years old at the time.
In Beaumont on May 25 a special train of Texas cowboys and trained ponies rushed to St. Martin Parish Louisiana to herd about 15 000 cattle away from floodwaters. Edgar Brown the so called millionaire cowboy led the effort with riders from Beaumont and Devers and later joined by a crew from Orange. Earlier two horses and riders had been sent from Lake Charles.
Governor Dan Moody granted clemency to Emmet Jones of Colorado County serving four years for burglary and to Ed Throneberry of Navarro County serving four years for theft and burglary. Jones, ill with tuberculosis, had petitions from Harris County citizens. Throneberry, a tenant farmer, sought to support his wife and seven children.
J Rowan Mills 52 active vice president of the Federal Farm Land Bank at Houston and former Sherman businessman died at a Sherman hospital after two weeks illness and surgery. Funeral services were held at St Stephen's Episcopal Church and burial was in West Hill Cemetery. Survived by wife Mary Moody, a brother Lawrence Mills of Tulsa and four sisters in Sherman Arizona Oklahoma and Dallas.
The Whitewright Board of Education elected teachers for the 1927 28 term. High school staff includes B W Crain as principal and several teachers. grammar school adds Miss Susie Noe as principal and six others with Miss Alice Bryant new to the faculty. Superintendent Fred W Smith was re elected. The state inspector praised the school system as one of the best in the state.
Sherman May 24 W G Venable 67 a former traveling salesman in North Texas suffered a fractured skull a badly lacerated hand and several bruises after being struck by an automobile while crossing the street Monday afternoon at Sherman.
Mrs Arthur Badgett hosted the Kentucky Town Club Friday afternoon with a round table on Diseases of Poultry. Members voted to donate 5 dollars to flood districts and Nevada sufferers. Mrs Lester Caylor resigned as reporter, Miss Eunice Turner elected. A note inviting visitors to June 3 meeting.
The T E L Class of the First Baptist Church met in the annex on Thursday. With Miss Myrtle Badgett absent Mrs Gladys Magar led the session and Mrs Oran Sears gave the devotional while Mrs J H Hawkins led prayers. Twenty four guests enjoyed the program and refreshments served by associate members.
Mrs. Evangeline Lodge Lindbergh, mother of Charles Lindbergh, refuses a film contract reportedly “well into six figures” and will not commercialize her son's fame. She calls for no part of the glory, remains a chemistry teacher, and will greet her son in New York with officials present. Detroit officials plan a reception upon his return.
Kansas City dispatch reports tornado strength winds sweeping parts of Kansas and Missouri with Fulton Kansas suffering the greatest damage from downed telephone wires and property damage near Parsons. East Lynn Missouri saw a tornado with minor damage while Holden Missouri and Springfield Missouri reported damage and heavy rain. Communication from Kansas City south was completely cut and miles of wire were torn down across Kansas Missouri and Oklahoma.
The Bethel Self Help Club met with Mrs. Laura Sloan last Friday to discuss how to make a kitchen more convenient. Home Demonstration questions guided the session as twelve members and three visitors enjoyed sandwiches and pie. June 3 meeting with Mrs. C. B. Neely was noted. Afterward Miss Inez Derryberry and Miss Myrtle Murray inspected Miss Sarah Binion’s kitchen, entered in the district contest.
In New York on May 24 an argument over the nationality of Captain Charles A. Lindbergh led to a stabbing death. Joseph Hand, 45, died from a heart wound as he was moved toward a hospital. Sidney Levene, 28, was arrested on homicide charges.
At nine o'clock Wednesday morning June 1 Miss Marian Barbee will supervise the first Story Hour at her home under PTA sponsorship. Children of all ages are invited to attend and listen.
The annual Children’s Day program will be held at Central Christian Church on Thursday evening June 2 at 8 o’clock. The public is invited to attend.
J. B. Lewis, construction foreman for the Community Gas Company, arrived in Whitewright with a fifty man crew and tools shipped from south of Dallas. All material for the local system is received and work will start soon to supply homes with natural gas. Claud Dick arrives to head the Whitewright office and will relocate his family here.
The Whitewright Independent School District seeks a city election to raise a 10 cent maintenance tax for two years to fund urgent repairs at the grammar school. Architect's plan estimates the cost at about 2300 dollars and no funds are available, prompting the emergency levy request.
J. W. Murphy moves a stock of dry goods from Panhandle Texas to Whitewright with newly purchased stock from 8S. R. Park. New shelving is installed and the opening date will be announced soon. Mr and Mrs Murphy relocate here and Mr Murphy returns after over twenty years in local dry goods trade. H Benedict, a pioneer merchant, has joined the new store.
Graham May 24 Young County voters approved a $1 200 000 good roads bond issue by about nine to one. The landslide followed three prior failed countywide bond attempts in recent years.
United States Spanish War Veterans Camp at Sherman requests notice of a joint memorial service for veterans of all wars to be held May 29 at 3 30 p m in West Houston Street Park Sherman. The program includes music by the Sherman Municipal Band and addresses by Judge Jeff Hassell Hon Ben Gafford and Hon Hubert Bookout. Boy Scouts will decorate graves with flags. All are invited.
The fifth Sunday singing convention will be held at Cedar Church on Sunday May 29. All singers and lovers of good music are invited. Cedar Church is located between Ida and Tom Bean.
Mr and Mrs Joe Hamilton were here Wednesday on the way to Greenville. He had a ten day medical treatment at Sherman and was allowed to go home Wednesday. Doctors advised four or five weeks rest before resuming work.
