Whitewright voters reject Amendments No 1 2 and 3 by wide margins and approve Amendment No 4 on water quality 39 39 in Whitewright 78 of 745 registered voters cast ballots election judge says turnout was light statewide trend favors rejection of Nos 1 2 and 3 while No 4 passes.
The Tigers finished their 1971 baseball season with a 10-0 six inning win over Fannindel. Larry Morris improved to 4-1, going all six innings with eight strikeouts. Roy Layman led hits with a .375 average while E J Durham and Mike Spann added key RBI and run support as Tigers close season 6-5 overall and 45 district.
Whitewright Chamber of Commerce president Tom Brookshear expects a large turnout for the annual banquet to be held in the high school gym. Purdue Industries vice president Wes Watkins will be the featured speaker with the address It’s Build a Dream. For the first time Woman of the Year and Man of the Year awards will be presented by Do Williams and Robert Sale. French’s of Sherman caters the dinner. Miss Jane Biggerstaff Miss Pat Marlow Miss Martha McFatridge and Miss Debbie Wortham will toss hose.
The final school year session installed Mrs. LaVerte Mathis as PTA president for 1971 72 and Mrs. Jo May as first vice president. Other officers include Pat Rebecca Clark second vice president Louise Franklin third vice president and Mrs Sue Brinkley treasurer. A spring and summer fashion show featured many students and home economics classes with designs by Wright and others. Junior and senior girls performed in styles from daisies to mythical mushrooms. Four Whitewright boys from Den I receiving awards at the monthly pack meeting were Derick Fleck Bear Badge John Jones Cub Pin Billy Riker Wolfe Badge and Steve Pressley Cub Pin with parents present to pin awards.
The Whitewright Riding Club rodeo on May 13 14 and 15 drew over 2500 spectators and 147 riders. Bull riders faced the toughest stock from Wings Rodeo Company of Bogota with 12 of 55 rides completed. Calf roper Hoss Rankin won top money at 313.50, as total prize money reached 3700.00. Relay winners included Blue Ridge over Denison, Cato over Texas Westerners, and Dodd City over Van Alstyne. Gift certificates and acts added showmanship to the three night event.
The Whitewright Historical Society will hold a work meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to move the Grayson College Museum from the old site to the downtown library. Former students placed the museum under the society last year and hope the Grayson College Room opens for June homecoming.
Whitewright Texas police chief Jim Frye completed a 40 hour law enforcement course last week conducted by Texas A M in Gainesville. The program covered criminal law procedures arrest search and seizure evidence juvenile law and investigation. Frye said the course added depth to his abilities and the department seeks new ways to serve the community more efficiently.
A.W. Jinks Newman drove to work when a 75 pound coyote stalked his gander. He retrieved his deer rifle and scared the animal away, having already lost six newborn calves this year. He notes wolves nearby and argues extermination is the most effective way to curb livestock predation.
Melissa Brinkley four year old daughter of Mr and Mrs A R Brinkley of Whitewright placed as second runner up in the Our Little Miss Pageant in Grayson County. She competed in the La Petite division for ages 3 to 6 at Grayson County Junior College judged in modeling personality grooming and poise with sportswear and party dresses. Melissa recovered from chicken pox prior to the event and said she enjoys wearing party dresses.
