The Whitewright Chamber of Commerce named Chester Slaughter Man of the Year and Mrs. Bill McFatridge Woman of the Year at its first annual awards banquet held last Thursday at the high school gym. Wes Watkins urged growth for Whitewright and the Northeast Texas area as he spoke on building a dream.

Wind Storm Hits Whites Wright. Lions Club Plans Bingo
Gusts up to 60 miles an hour ripped tree branches and toppled power lines causing blocked passages. Rain totaled 1.26 inches in 45 minutes, year-to-date 8.83 inches. Two minor auto accidents reported. no injuries. Lions Club bingo at the high school gym 7:30 p.m. Saturday raises funds for Crippled Children's Camp Kerrville and other civic causes. prizes up to 65 dollars plus door prize donated by local merchants.

Whitewright High Seniors Set To Graduate Tonight
Thirty one Whitewright High School seniors are scheduled to graduate at 8 p m tonight at the First United Methodist Church. Reverend Bill Grisham will be speaker and School Board President Bill Dyer will present diplomas. Miss Kathy Morris will be valedictorian and Miss Holly Faison the salutatorian. An eighth grade graduation follows Friday at 7 59 p m with Reverend Doug Rymer as keynote and Superintendent S T Montgomery presenting diplomas.

Rotary Members See Anti-Theft Devices Demonstrated
Rotary members were introduced to electronic surveillance at their Friday meeting. Carl Arthur of Vertex Industries showcased anti theft and anti fire devices including central panels linked to police and fire stations, ultrasonic detectors, infrared sensors, magnetic switches, dial alarms, vibration and smoke detectors. He noted over half of business and home crimes remain unsolved and fire losses can be high.

Members from First United Methodist and First Baptist churches jointly sponsored a hamburger fry after Sunday services to honor the Whitewright graduating class seniors. Organized games were directed with five seniors attending.

Whitewright prepares for summer baseball with two Pee-Wee teams two Little League teams and one Pony League team directed by Floyd Flowers. Library activity as club installs carpet and moves museum
The Friday Literary Club laid new carpet in the library lobby while the Historical Society moved the Grayson College Museum into a rear room. Four thousand books were relocated to clear space for carpet. The museum items include Pictographs, a Rosewood piano, and Civil War desks. Open to the public by early June.

Redistricting Plan Triggers Strong Opposition in Texas
The House Redistricting Committee advanced a bill cutting Grayson County from the Fourth District and attaching it to Patman’s First District, creating an arc that reaches Gregg County and extends 250 miles to Clay County. Congressman Roberts, Rep. Cole, and Sen. Kennard condemned the plan, predicting passage only if blocked in a House Senate conference.

Nicky Kent Undergoes Open Heart Surgery
Nicky Kent seven year old son of Mr and Mrs Dan Kent of the city underwent open heart surgery Tuesday in Dallas. He is said to be the first open heart patient in Whitewright and at press time was reported doing satisfactorily and in intensive care.

First Grayson County 4H Track Meet Crowns High Point Winners
The inaugural Grayson County 4H track meet drew 13 competitors across 58 events for ages 9 to 16. High point trophies were awarded by age and gender with winners including Sharon Grigg, Jaci Dickey, Bobbie Bruton, Pam Umphress, Dale Jones, Ronnie Fortner, Doug Nowlin, and Roger Asrey. Whitewright and S&S tied for team honors, with Wranglers 4-H second and Van Alstyne School Club close behind.
