An Age of Little Business
During feudal days in Europe lords owned land while vassals worked it. The South kept plantations under the feudal system with slaves earning food and shelter. After the Civil War sharecropping kept many colored people tied to landlords. Government limits and cheap farm products hurt large scale farming. A small farm around 50 acres can sustain a family, while big farms with hired help fail due to high costs. A small business with $2,000 invested can earn $1,000, unlike a big town store that often goes broke. Two Whitewright merchants run small businesses without government aid and support families.
