Former Smith County Judge Brady P. Gentry of Tyler was confirmed as chairman of the Highway Commission by the Senate after a 25 minute executive session. He succeeds John Wood of Timpson, with R L Bobbitt remaining on the commission until 1943. Wood's term ended February 15. Gentry will serve six years from that date.
J B Harrison of Clovis New Mexico leads the West Texas-New Mexico League in batting at week’s end. His .518 average comes from 56 at bats with 29 singles four doubles and one home run. He has 20 runs and 12 RBIs this season. Harrison is the son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Harrison of Whitewright and is in his second organized season.
Denison Army Engineers office reports 53,000 applicants for the Red River flood control and hydroelectric project since its reestablishment in 1938. Up to 4,000 workers may be hired at peak, with construction likely not starting until fall after Congress approves a $5.7 million first-year appropriation. Civil service rules govern appointments above laborer, with notices via district civil service offices and employment services in Denison, Sherman, New Orleans, and St. Louis.
Donald Glenn Rickman, 14 months, fell into a 14 foot cistern on his parents farm five miles southeast of Kirkland. His mother Mrs O J Rickman tied a rope to a post and climbed down into two feet of water. She carried the child from the cistern by gripping his clothing with her teeth and pulling up the rope hand over hand. The child had minor head bruises and the mother received rope burns.

Justice Douglas reverses a Texas federal ruling and upholds the indictment charging Rene Allred Dallas and Neal Powers with illegal transport under the Connally hot oil act. He held the act’s extension created one continuous statute, keeping the Sept. 17, 1938 indictment valid.
The House considers an omnibus tax bill to fund social security in Texas after a failed push for a sales tax. Proposed taxes include per barrel charges on oil wells, higher rates on natural gas and sulphur, a cigarette tax increase, admission charges, auto and card taxes, and a broad range of percent levies on goods and services. The plan also lists two percent rates on commissions, jewelry, musical instruments, appliances, and other items with value thresholds.

Memphis Tennessee Gibb Gilchrist dean of engineering at Texas A&M will head the national cotton council survey of cotton in road construction. He will conduct investigations and experiments to determine practical aspects of cotton fabric for reinforcing bituminous highways.
Floyd Everheart will be valedictorian and Charles Harrison salutatorian of Whitewright High School's graduating class. Everheart posts a 94 four year average, Harrison 92, with runners up Wilma Alexander 90 and Sarah Kathryn Atterberry, Roberta Ford and Charles Howard at 89. Commencement speakers include Everheart and Harrison along with Naomi Penny, Sarah Kathryn Arterberry, Howard, Earnheart, and Ford. Baccalaureate is Sunday May 21 at 8 pm at the Baptist Church. commencement Friday May 26 at 8 pm in the high school auditorium. Master of ceremonies is Wilma Alexander. Class roll lists 33 seniors.
