Whitewright community drives raise funds and honor youth
The Whitewright Cancer drive, sponsored by Town and Country Club and aided by Hero Club and FHA, netted 174.74. Three Whitewright youths Amy Francis Gregg Almond and Nathan Rymer earned a free one hour flight to view Lake Texoma and Lake Murray from Ardmore Municipal Airport sponsored by Daedalians. Other items include a Sing Song at Assembly of God Church on May 16 and a bike selling subscriptions contest for The Whitewright Sun with multiple bike and radio prizes. Track results note Steve Hodge placing third in the 880 yards at Stephenville and the VHS Weekly News praised by the editor for student work with Mrs Griggs.

Whitewright Chamber Targets Promotion and Fourth of July Events
Twenty two members attended the May Whitewright Chamber of Commerce meeting at Firemen's Hall. Priscelle Riker was elected president, with reports on a business review page, welcome signs, a slogan contest, and July 4th commitments from local groups. The Tigers beat Princeton 8-4 in bi district play as Kenneth Franklin starred on the mound. J.W. Davis plans Blue Grass bands at Legion Park and a May 23 poster deadline for patriotic displays. The group aims for 75 members and plans by law printouts for members. Rick Newman, Whitewright, signed with Howard Payne University football, after a 9-1 season. Regional play location unspecified.

Direct Distance Dialing Comes To Whitewright
Mayor Dick Walker rang in the first direct distance phone call from Whitewright last Wednesday at Continental Telephone Co. The two year project faced fall delays from late shipments but will cut cross talk and speed up long distance dialing. Dial by 1 plus area code if different, then number. automatic ID reduces operator use except on rural or party lines. District engineer Richard Howell and district facility manager Joe Norwood assisted the conversion.

City Council Names Department Heads and Talks Resources
Whitewright officials approved appointing department heads Sewage Plant Chester Slaughter Police Leroy DuQuette Labor Force Don Grisby and Office Helen Billner with all reporting to the mayor. The council authorized mayoral hiring and firing powers with forthcoming debates on police chief exception and city projects including water meters gates and a park plan. The meeting also covered security architecture for Well No 4 and a new police reserve unit while scouting and trail work continued. The session closed after approving bills and noting a NTSC career guidance program and a historical note on the first modern safety pin.
