Whitewright High names valedictorian and salutatorian for 1976

Jayne Harper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J A Harper Jr, named valedictorian with a 95.7 four year average. Betty Kay Geers, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Paul Geers, named salutatorian with 95.1. Both 12 year students in the Whitewright system, active Beta Honor Society members, and listed in Who's Who among American High School Students. Betty Kay plans Baylor University music studies. Other scholars Gina Judd Brenda Thornhill Karen Jarvis and Charles Pierce to receive academic award blankets for four years at Whitewright High with 90.0+ averages.

Class of 76 Honored With Hamburger Party

Whitewright high school honored its Class of 76 with a hamburger party at Mrs Gloria Meisenbach home. Hostesses included Mrs Bill Pettit Mrs Bobby Clark Mrs J A Harper Jr Mrs P M Jarvis and Mrs Ron Faison. Ping pong and dancing followed the dinner. Twenty eight seniors attended.

Country Musical Set May 20 at grade school cafetorium

The 200 Club sponsors a country musical on Thursday May 20 at 8 p.m. in the grade school cafetorium to benefit Whitewright senior citizens. Horace McDonald and his Rhythm Boys, the Louis Franklin Trio, Tom Mac Holmes, and Shay and Tina Howell perform. admission is 1.50 for adults and .75 for children.

Rites Held For B T Marlow Of Whitewright

Services for Robert Marlow 87 of Whitewright were held at Mullican Little Chapel in Bells with burial in Hebron Cemetery. Marlow, known as the Knapp shoe man, died Thursday in a Whitewright nursing home. He had lived in Whitewright since 1970 and was a retired salesman and Methodist. Surviving are three sons in California, two step-sons in Dallas and Oklahoma City, one step-daughter in Oklahoma City, two brothers, a sister, and a nephew network.

Roberts Wins 66 Percent in Fourth District Primary

Congress candidate Ray Roberts won the Democratic primary in the Fourth District with about 66.1 percent, carrying Collin, Grayson and Rockwall counties and posting strong showings across Cooke Denton Hunt Gregg Kaufman Rains and Van Zandt. He thanked supporters and framed the win as endorsement of national defense fiscal restraint and common sense governance.

Grayson County College Plans 11th Commencement Speaker

Grayson County College Sherman Denison will hold its 11th commencement Friday at 8 p.m. in the college auditorium. Registrar Frank Graves released a list of 480 graduates, the largest class since the college’s 1965 founding. Keynote speaker is Dr. Joe B. Rushing, chancellor of Tarrant County Junior College District, with a biographical note on his Texan education and career. Commencement at First United Methodist Church on May 26 at 8 p.m.

Rotary Fish Fry Planned Near Whitewright Pasture

Whitewright Rotarians Rotary Anns and guests will gather Thursday night in the Sears pasture northeast of town for the annual fish fry replacing the Friday noon meeting. The prior week’s speaker was Rev. Jimmy Hedges new pastor of the First Baptist church introduced by Rotarian Mac Woodruff.

New Postal Hours Told for Local Office

Beginning Monday May 17 the post office will close two hours daily from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Window service runs 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturdays. No mail work on Sundays or five major holidays. Postmaster John Biggerstaff warns of slower service due to a 58.6 percent staff reduction.

Blanton Sweeps State Track With 60 Yard Dash Record

Beverly Blanton a Whitewright High School senior won the 60 yard dash at the Texas Girls High School State Track Meet in Austin tying a state mark at 7.1 seconds. The Whitewright 440 yard relay finished fourth in Class A with 50.6 seconds, Paducah taking the event.

Bethel WMU Meeting Covers Japanese Americans

Bethel WMU met on May 3 under Mrs. Alva Key to discuss the issues faced by Japanese Americans during the war. Jessie Williams Edith Alexander Billie Bartley assisted with the program. Pat Pierce read the Call to Prayer and led prayer. Johnnie England oversaw business. Plans were made for the church banquet to honor graduating seniors Candy Cate John Williams Kenneth Franklin and Chuck Pierce.

Presbyterian Women Meet With Mrs Sears

The United Presbyterian Women of the First Presbyterian Church met at Mrs Homer Sears home. Mrs Paul Cook presided and Miss Mardell Pumphrey presented the Year Book of Prayer. Ora Gray gave a devotional and Mrs John Holloway led a program titled What Does God Do To Us When We Betray. Eleven members and one guest were served refreshments.
